About this Item: Reynal & Hitchcock (1943), New York, 1943. Hardcover. Antoine de Saint-Exupery (illustrator). First Edition. This is copy #103 of 525 numbered copies SIGNED by the author on the tipped-in limitation page. The American edition appeared before the French or English editions, and this is the ONLY way to obtain a signed edition of this book as the author was assigned to fly with the French Free Air Force shortly before publication and went missing about a year later while on a mission. This special issue of one of the most beloved books of the twentieth century is, consequently, one of the most desired limited editions and does not come often upon the marketplace. THE LITTLE PRINCE is both the most-read and most-translated book in the French language and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. This copy is clean and bright with virtually no wear and is rather uncommon as such. About Fine in a Good at best dustwrapper lacking much of the spine. Seller Inventory # 013802

About this Item: Reynal and Hitchcock, New York, 1943. Signed limited first edition, one of 525 signed numbered copies, this is number 409. Signed by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. Small quarto, original salmon cloth, illustrated. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The Little Prince has something of Hans Christian Andersen in it, something of Lewis Carroll, and even, it may perhaps be said, a bit of John Bunyan. Saint-Exupery's lyrical treasure has entered children’s literature, in the manner of quite a few other such hard-to-define works in the preceding centuries" (Pierpont Morgan Library). A year after the book’s publication in 1943, Saint-Exupery disappeared over the Mediterranean while flying a reconnaissance mission for his French air squadron, making this signed limited very desirable. About this Item: New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1943, 1943. First Edition; French language issue. One of 260 numbered copies, signed by the author; the English language limited edition comprised 525 numbered and signed copies. Gift inscription in French and English on the front free endpaper; minor stains; very good in a chipped and stained, good dust jacket. The jacket spine is numbered identically with the book (although the ink is faded), as called for in the limited issues of this book. While the French language issue was limited to roughly half of the English language one, it has always seemed scarcer than that difference would account for. Saint-Exupery wrote this work while in this country, returned to fly for France, perishing over the Mediterranean the following year. Le Petit Prince was issued posthumously in his home country. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted. Seller Inventory # 34894

About this Item: Reynal & Hitchcock, New York City, 1943. Hardcover. colour illustrations (illustrator). First edition. pp. 91. Larger 8vo. The dust jacket is age-toned, with a few minor scrapes to the front and rear panels. The cloth is exceptionally clean. Overall, a near fine copy in a good plus dust jacket. 'The Little Prince' is a novella and the most famous work of the French aristocrat, writer, poet and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944). The novella is both the most-read and most-translated book in the French language and has been translated into more than 250 languages and dialects. Annual sales still top two million copies with past sales totaling over 140 million copies worldwide. It is one of the best-selling books ever published. After the outbreak of the Second World War, Saint-Exupery was exiled to North America. In the midst of personal upheavals and failing health, he produced almost half of the writings for which he would be remembered, including this tender tale of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss, in the form of a young alien prince fallen to Earth. The first printing was in 1943 by Reynal & Hitchcock, Inc. whose offices were, at that date, located at 386 Fourth Avenue, New York City, and it preceded the first French edition by two years. The dust jacket should show the price of $2.00 and the rose should appear on page 27 and face left. Later Harcourt printings had the rose facing right and on page 28. The colophon should have five lines, all in italics. The cloth should be salmon in color with red lettering (later printings had black lettering). All of these points exist in our copy. About this Item: Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1943. Softcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. First softcover edition. Color illustrated stiff wrappers. 92 pp. Illustrations in color and black and white by the author. Text in French. First state with publisher's name and author's name wrapping slightly around the spine strip onto the covers; so-called "flying crow" (actually a printing fault) present in illustration on p. 63. The extremely scarce first softcover edition of this, one of the most famous and best loved of all 20th century books. Though not always as pricey, the first softcover edition is far scarcer than the hardcover edition; both were printed in New York, both in the original French and the English translation due to the Second World War (the first French-published edition would not appear until 1946). The wives of Saint Exupery's publishers Eugene Reynal and Curtice Hitchcock set the author and his wife up in an apartment in New York in the early 1940s and it was Elizabeth Reynal who, upon seeing Saint Exupery's doodles and sketches of the "Little Prince", urged him to assemble them into book form with text. He produced the watercolors and text in the summer and fall of 1942 and Reyal & Hitchcock published it in 1943 (NY Times, Jan. 23, 2014). These original drawings were exhibited at the Morgan Library in winter, 2014. Condition: tight, internally clean and bright with even toning to the covers, small scuff to the upper portion of the planet on which the Little Prince stands and again to the bottom front left corner; light corner crease lower front right. Soiling a bit heavier about the very edges. The rear wrap has spot staining along the left hand side that extends to the edge of the rear blank and less so to the final page of text. An image may be viewed on our web site. Seller Inventory # E13859

About this Item: Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1943. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. SAINT-EXUPÉRY, ANTOINE DE (illustrator). First edition. FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL FRENCH OF ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST BELOVED BOOKS. The Little Prince was "published in French, with [Saint-Exupéry's] own watercolor illustrations, as Le Petit Prince in 1943. Translated into hundreds of languages, some 150 million copies of the novella have sold worldwide, making it one of the best-selling books in publishing history. "Saint-Exupéry believed firmly that children see the important things in life-such as the bonds of friendship and responsibility-more clearly than adults do because they see with their hearts, not just with their eyes. ('One sees clearly only with the heart,' says the fox to the prince in the story's most quoted lines. 'The essential is invisible to the eye.') In other words, children see with awe what adults look at with cynicism, and in the conversations between the pilot and the Little Prince the former is reminded of what childhood was like. By the end of the book he has been changed totally by the encounter. "Younger children have long loved this simple story, while older readers have been moved by its deep and multilayered message" (Cathy Lowne, Britannica). Note: The French-language edition and English-language edition (The Little Prince, translated by Katherine Woods) were both issued in New York (where Saint-Exupery was living) in April 1943, with the English issued a few days before the French. It was not published in France until after the liberation in late 1945. With correct first printing points: $2.00 and Reynal and Hitchcock's Fourth Avenue address on the dust jacket; page 63 with the "mark of the raven" on the illustration. New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1943. Small quarto, original light brown cloth with illustration on front board, original pictorial dust jacket. With color illustrations by the author throughout. Book exceptionally fine; dust jacket with some toning (as usual), particularly to spine; rear panel with uniform toning except for rectangular patch that is not toned. A particularly nice copy of a book that is prone to wear and notoriously difficult to find in collectible condition. Original cloth, original dust jacket. Seller Inventory # 2109

About this Item: Heinemann, 1944. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by Heinemann in 1944. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just a hint of pushing at the spine ends and a light fade of colouring to the spine. No end papers as issued (This title was issued with both the end papers present and more commonly as here without. This was not an uncommon practice during war time production when paper was scarce). Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown which is obscured by the front wrapper flap. Light dustiness to the upper text block. Mild spotting to the pastedowns and half-title. The pages are very clean. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. Mild edge wear at the spine ends and a few small closed tears to the edges. A hint of toning to the spine. The wrapper artwork looks stunning in the removable Brodart archival cover. Stunning illustrations in colour and B/W by the author. A war time production and as such, the english edition is very scarce more-so with such attributes. An exceptional copy. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
