About this Item: Bloomsbury Book Auctions, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 24th November, 1988, 1988. Laminated wrappers, 4to, 25 cm, [63] pp, ills, plates (some colour). 331 lots. From the introduction: "From the early part of the century the Curwen Press had established a reputation not only for the quality of its printing, but also through the imaginative use of artists in the world of typography and graphic design. The occurrence of World War II did much to disrupt this state of affairs within the company. But there had been considerable developments in the world of printing technology, notably in photolithography. These brought with them newer and faster types of printing machines to cope with photo-process and different demands on the skill of the printers. However, the directors of the Curwen Press were anxious to re-establish their links with printers and sculptors. The limited edition print seemed to provide an ideal solution. In 1958, Timothy Simon, Robert Erskine (of the St. George's Print Gallery in Cork St.) and myself, were able to found the basis of the Curwen Studio in premises close to the parent company in Plaistow. Stone lithography was the dominant process and all prints were pulled entirely by hand, editioned in no more copies than 75, as decreed by the Purchase Tax of the day. Some of the artists who produced work there were Ceri Richards, John Piper, Henry Moore and Josef Herman. With the move to the present premises in Midford Place, W.l, there came an expansion in the form of more staff and machinery, to cope with the growing interest shown both by publishers and public in the artist's original print - seen now as a revival of considerable importance."
