About this Item: Harper and Brothers, New York, 1956. A very good copy, finely bound in woven blue cloth and a dulled black cloth spine stamped in gold. Clean and tight throughout with a bumped corner and some light wear to the top and bottom of the spine ends. With a very good plus dust jacket printed in blue and red on white with a great photo of Senator Kennedy by Hank Walker on the rear panel. The jacket has some light edge rubbing and tiny closed tears at the top of the spine ends Among those profiled by Kennedy are: John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, Thomas Hart Benton, Sam Houston, Edmund G. Ross, Lucius Lamar, George Norris, and Robert A. Taft. This copy is inscribed and signed in blue ink by John F. Kennedy's Secretary II, Mrs. Evelyn Lincoln: "To Paul C. Richards, with very best wishes John Kennedy." on the front endpaper. There may be some ironic humor here, as Paul C. Richards is a reknowned dealer in American Presidential Autographs. One wonders if John Kennedy asked Mrs. Lincoln to inscribe a book on his behalf for the dealer and collector for his special delectation. In Charles Hamilton s splendid book The Robot That Helped to Make a President (A reconnaissance into the mysteries of John F. Kennedy s Signature), he details the signatures of Secretary II, Mrs. Evelyn Lincoln, on behalf of the President with several examples that match exactly this inscription in this copy of Profiles in Courage. Hamilton writes: "Perhaps the most amusing attempt to imitate President Kennedy s signature, an attempt which appears even on letters mailed from the White House, is by Secretary II, almost certainly Mrs. Evelyn Lincoln Because of its amusing similarity the name given to a certain fatalistic short-haired Arctic rodent, I have designated this inept imitation the "Lemming" Signature. (pp. 24 and 25). Note: "Paul C. Richards was an heir of the Ocean Spray cranberry family, and started with a good bankroll. He was quickly buying extraordinary autographs, and continued to do so until his untimely death in 1993 at age 54. To receive a catalog from Paul Richards was, as Wordsworth said, "very heaven" for an autograph collector. There were literally hundreds of items in each one, in every field of interest and in every price range." (RAAB Collection) Profiles in Courage is a 1957 Pulitzer Prize-winning volume of short biographies describing acts of bravery and integrity by eight United States Senators throughout the Senate's history. The book profiles senators who defied the opinions of their party and constituents to do what they felt was right and suffered severe criticism and losses in popularity because of their actions. It begins with a quote from Edmund Burke on the courage of the English Statesman, Charles James Fox, in his 1783 attack upon the tyranny of the East India Company in the House of Commons. The book focuses intensely on mid 19th century antebellum America and the efforts of Senators to delay the Civil War. Profiles was widely celebrated and became a best seller. John F. Kennedy is credited as its author, but there are credible allegations that most of it was the work of his speechwriter, Theodore Sorensen. (Wikipedia) Book of the Month Club Edition with dot on rear corner and no price on jacket. Seller Inventory # 750

In his preface of 1955, Kennedy briefly mentions Professor Jules Davids, a History Professor at The Georgetown University School of Foreign Service for his assistance with the book. Photo of JFK on the back of the DJ. The book is signed in what is certainly a secretarial signature on the first blank page, "With Very Best Wishes, Jack Kennedy." NOT SIGNED by Kennedy himself. Included with the book is a letter from Kennedy to journalist Earl Mazo of The New York Herald, on his Senate Letterhead, with notes corrections, and corresponding letters typewritten from Mazo to the Senator. Of special significance is a Christmas card with the gilt embossed Eagle emblem printed, on the front flap and on the inside "May the blessings of Christman be upon you and yours, Senator and Mrs. John F. Kennedy," signed "Best Wishes, Jack." Also secretarial, not authenticated. Eight pieces of correspondence in all, dated 1958 and 1959. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Secretarial Signature. About this Item: Hamish Hamilton, London, 1964. Early printing of the Memorial edition of Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece of Kennedy. With a special foreword by Robert F. Kennedy. Boldly signed by Robert F. Kennedy and inscribed, "For John- With warm wishes Ethel Kennedy." From the library of South African policy expert John Kane Berman with his name to the front free endpaper. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality.". Seller Inventory # 101932

About this Item: Harper & Brothers, New York, 1956. Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Reprint. PROFILES IN COURAGE. John F Kennedy. Harper & Brothers, New York 1956 Reprint. 266pp Hardback. This copy is bound in original blue cloth covered boards, black linen spine with bright gilt titling. Outer page edges are uncut, the text block is unmarked bright and white, tight and square. The unclipped dust wrapper has some minimal edge wear. It has now been covered in removable clear mylar protective film. The copyright page makes no mention of 'First Edition' and has the letters H-F suggesting that this is not a first edition. The inscription to the f.e.p. in the author's own hand in black ball point reads "To Professor Salvador Madariaga with the highest esteem on the occasion of a most pleasant visit to the Senate John Kennedy 1957" There are two other sets of figures, I suspect added at a later date, which may be Professor Madrariaga's own library reference numbers. Salvadore Madariaga (1886-1978) was a statesman, scholar and writer. He was appointed Spanish Ambassador to the United States in 1931, a post he held for five years. As a Classic Liberal he went into exile in Oxford, England after the eruption of the Spanish Civil War and organised opposition to Generalissimo Francisco Franco. He was a regular visitor to the United States and later corresponded with Kennedy on Latin American affairs. This book was said to have been written in the years 1954-1955 while Kennedy was convalescing after an operation on his back as a result of an injury sustained during World War II. It contains a number of chapters devoted to notable Americans who at crucial moments in history had revealed a special sort of greatness while disregarding dreadful and personal consequences to their public and private lives. It became a best seller and he was awarded the Pulitzer prize for the book. After publication the book was subject to a claim by an ABC columnist that it had not been written by Kennedy, a charge that was robustly defended by both Kennedy's, father and son. Evidence and statements were produced to substantiate the fact that John F Kennedy worked on the book and due cognisance was given to the editorial assistance given by Theodore C. Sorensen (acknowledged in the preface to this book). In the end, because ABC could not prove otherwise, they agreed to broadcast a lengthy retraction and the matter was settled. About this Item: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York, 1956. First edition of Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Octavo, original half cloth, with eight pages of black-and-white photogravures. Foreword by Allan Nevins. Boldly signed by President Barack Obama on the half-title page, "All the best Barack Obama." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Phil Grushkin. Seller Inventory # 108755

INSCRIBED "For Mathilda Westbrook Sinclair - / With the very best wishes / John F. Kennedy", Quality copy of one of the most important Presidential books of the 20th Century, certainly the only one to have won a Pulitzer Prize. 16mo 6" x 8.5" pp. [vi] xix 1- 266. Book has light fraying along edges including front right corner and slight split at top of spine and puncture hole mid-spine. Binding is very strong.despite being opened often to admire this historic signature. Dust Jacket, perhaps married, has only two small chips on front lower left, slight browning at upper half of spine and light wear at top and bottom of DJ spine. Becoming available less frequently, cornerstone of every authentic Presidential collection. "All us in the Senate meet endless examples of such conflicting pressures, which only reflect the inconsistencies inevitable in our complex economy. If we tell our constituents frankly that we can do nothing, they feel we are unsympathetic or inadequate. If we try and fail - usually meeting a counteraction from other Senators representing other interests - they say we are like all the rest of the politicians. All we can do is retreat into the Cloakroom and weep on the shoulder of a sympathetic colleague - or go home and snarl at our wives." (p 19). Light Blue with black spine and gold text on spine.
