About this Item: McCormick, J., London, 1832. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A collection of 47 fine lithographic plates of predominently animals - single subjects and multiple vignette studies of horses, horseman, dogs, cattle and hunting scenes, each approximately.185 x 270mm. All seem to be after Thomas Fairland and published by J. McCormick of 147 Strand, London and printed/lithographed by various printers (see below). The plates are dated 1832, 1833, 1834 or undated. No title page, though probably not missing - see note below. Contemporary binding of half tan calf over blue marbled boards, gilt rules to spine, but untitled. Some general wear and rubbing, but strong, leather chipped to head/tail of the spine, lower corners worn. Contents good, original end papers, a little browning, spotting and foxing, four plates with ink stains to lower outside corner, a few short splits at sheet gutter edges, a few plates trimmed close to titles or titles trimmed, some plates with a little surface dirt. Overall very good. It is unlikely that this book was ever bound with a title page as it would seem that this is very much a collection of plates subsequently bound up. At the back of the album are a number of single-dog portraits with extensive landscape backgrounds - the style of these plates and their titles being distinctly different from the rest. Also, the fact that the plates were produced over, at least, a three year period might suggest they were issued separately. However, 'A New Progressive Drawing Book of Animals', a very rare title published by McCormick in 1833 appears similar though the only copy that we are aware of had only 34 plts. Those plates that are dated are bound in chronological order. The plates were variously printed/engraved by Lefevre & Kohler, or W. Clerk of 41 Dean St, Soho, or C. Hallmandel, or A. Ducote's Lithog' , 70 St Martin's Lane. [Provenance: with the armorial bookplate of Henry Birkbeck to the front end paper: Norfolk family of High House estate at West Acre, Norfolk, with Grade I listed house built in 1756.] Size: 4to. Book. Seller Inventory # 030485

The Art of Drawing in its Various: SMITH, Thomas.

About this Item: London: Printed for Sherwood, Jones, and Co., 1825, 1825. Octavo (213 x 132 mm). Contemporary calf, red label, spine richly gilt to compartments, double gilt fillets to covers enclosing beaded roll in blind, marbled endpapers and edges, blue silk page marker. Covers a little spotted, some foxing to contents, chip to fore edge of p. 13, offsets from plates. A very good copy. Illustrated throughout with woodcut diagrams and illustrations, 16 plates, 13 of which are hand-coloured, 58 colour samples within woodcut frames. First edition of this richly illustrated guide to drawing and painting, part of the expansion of popular manuals for artistry which occurred in the early 19th century. This expansion reflected the fact that drawing and painting, which had once been considered a supplement to a general education for the genteel, had by the Regency Period become regarded as an essential component. The present work is a fine example of these popular guides, offering 28 lessons which start in perspective and finish in the contrast of colours, with guides to the anatomy of humans, animals and plants. The book is relatively scarce, with OCLC listing 16 copies in institutional holdings. Tooley, 459; not in Abbey. Seller Inventory # 125566
