About this Item: in aedibus academicis excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis Academiae Typographi, Glasguae, 1758. First Foulis Press printing of Virgil's works, which were partially edited by Dutch classical scholar Pieter Burman the Elder (1668?1741) and later finished by his philologist nephew Pieter Burman the Younger (1714?1778) (Sandys, Classical Scholarship, II, p. 443). Dibdin notes that the text is "printed in a correct and magnificent manner" ? a commonly felt sentiment still, today, in regards to most Foulis Press productions. Provenance: Partially rubbed armorial bookplate of Alexander Gordon of Culvennan, Esquire. 8vo (16.3 cm; 6.375"). [6], 397, [3] pp. Lacks blank following dedication. ESTC T139215; Gaskell 360; Dibdin, Greek and Latin Classics p. 558. Polished calf with spine compartments stamped and lettered in gilt, all edges speckled red; moderate rubbing, a few spots on front cover, offsetting on first and last few leaves from binding. Gentle age-toning; lacks blank following dedication. Marked as above, light pencilling on endpapers. => An elegant edition of Virgil from a fine 18th-century Scots press. Seller Inventory # 36157

About this Item: Birminghamiae: Typis Johannis Baskerville. John Baskerville, 1757. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Publii Virgilii Maronis Bucolica, Georgica, et Aeneis Birminghamiae: Typis Johannis Baskerville. MDCCLVII [John Baskerville. 1757] Hardcover. 432 pages. Full leather. Original boards with gold borders and corner decorations. Rebacked in matching leather sometime in the nineteenth century, very finely decorated with raised cords, lettering and date and decorations in the other panels. Overall a very attractive binding. Though unsigned, the rebacking is done to the absolute highest standards; it is one of those rare repairs that improves the book in every way. 9.25 x 11.25 inches. Binding tight. Pages clean and square. No stains, no foxing, no damage. The condition of the text block is altogether remarkable. Original boards have some bumps and speckles, but they do not detract in any way. This is an exemplary copy. The first book to come from the famous presses of John Baskerville. Also the first English (indeed, first European) book to be printed on wove paper, instead of laid. It was recognized immediately as a masterpiece and has been sought by collectors since it first appeared. So great was the demand, that Baskerville printed a second edition as nearly identical to the first as he could, sparking debate that continues to this day as to which are the mistakes and misprints that indicate the first printing. This copy is, without a doubt, from the 1757 first edition. There are nearly a dozen typos associated with these earliest printings. List of subscribers names is present, with 21 names. The alignment of the type on the title page is consistent with the first printing, with the J in Johannis beneath the B-I in Birminghamae. The header on page 133 is awkwardly spaced. Page 143 is mis-numbered as 341. 30 lines of text on page 144. I have seen copies described that mention a mistaken catch-word on page 143 (it is correct here) and a correction done by hand (not present here). John Baskerville’s career as a printed lasted only from this publication of his Virgil of 1757 until his death in 1775, but he is nevertheless considered one of the great English printers. He introduced a paper that is now the industry standard, more than 200 years later; his fonts, beautiful in their own right, were brought to American by Franklin who used them in many early U.S. publications, tying Baskerville’s typography to the great state papers of the new democracy. His wide margins and generously spaced blocks of text are instantly recognizable, and have been collected since they were fresh off his press. Bookplate on the inside front cover with coat of arms, motto, and the name J. Garbett Walsham, Knill Court. Walsham was a Colonel in the Royal Radford Militia, whose genealogy can be traced back to the twefth century in the English peerages. Knill Court was located in Herefordshire. It burned down in 1943 (photo from lh dot matthewbeckett dot com, a site dedicated to the Lost Heritage of England). Col. Walsham’s library must have survived the fire, because several volume have passed through major auctions houses in the last 20 years. A second bookplate beneath Walsham’s says, “Benjamin T. Pierce.” I know very little of this, more recent, owner, except that he had a marvelous collection of Baskerville imprints and fine bindings from the late 1700s and early 1800s & that included amongst his books was Hawthorne’s biography of Franklin Piece adorned with several Pierce family signatures. This is a tenuous connection to the 14th President, and ultimately it does not much alter the value of the book, but it is all I have. Seller Inventory # Fred-W522

About this Item: printed by John Baskerville, Birmingham, 1754. Contemporary Calf. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: None Issued. First Edition. Bound in, as issued, in THE MONTHLY REVIEW, July - December, 1754. A prospectus, with specimen text, for John Baskerville¿s edition of Virgil¿s Works, which was published in 1757. 8vo., 480, [4]p, original blue covers laid in at front, contemporary leather, boards detached. Laid into a clamshell box covered with Irish linen buckram of a compatible brown color and with a red leather label with gilt stamping to spine. As described in the Baskerville Bibliography - item iva. This copy conforms exactly to that description. The proposals are 9" wide by 12 1/4" high. When purchased in 1990 they were torn at the fold lines and had various smudges and accretions. Conservation consisted of dry cleaning, washing and lining with a thin Japanese paper (Kizukishi) and using wheat starch paste. The proposals were then refolded using the fold marks at the time they were bound into the Montly Review. They were reattached to the text block by tipping around the section in front of them, around the back. No repairs were made to the binding, except minor, as needed after reattaching the proposals.
