About this Item: Joannem Janssonium, Amsterdam, 1663. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. [8], 320p, [16], [2], 3¿174p. *6, A¿O12, A¿G12. Engraved medallion of Alexander the Great, foldout map and a full page engraving on p. 73. Collijn col. 0195:02. Records four copies. The engraved title page is dated 1664. Edited by Johannes Loccenius (1598¿1677) who had already announced in the 1621 Apuleius, which he had attended to after the editor¿s death, of his intention to publish an edition of Curtius. The core text of the first edition was based on a text edited by Titus Popmæ, but with textual emendations by Petrus Scriverius (1576¿1660), a Dutch scholar and contemporary of Heinsius and with Loccenius 89 pages of notes added in a separate section. Loccenius later dropped Titus Popmæ¿s text for the much improved by Heinsius published by the Elzeviers in 1633 and it would remain the core text going forward. Since Queen Kristina had abdicated the throne in 1654, the introductory dedication to her by Loccenius found in the earlier Jansson editions is omitted. The Jansson press also issued a 24mo edition in the same year, but without Loccenius¿ Notis Politicis and Index Philologico. His edition of Curtius remained a best seller throughout the 17th century and his commentaries were incorporated into the Quintus Curtius variorum editions. However, some of the editions with only Loccenius commentaries are relatively scarce. This copy lacks the engraved title page dated 1664, but is complete with the printed title page dated 1663. Portions of the map is missing and light soiling to the binding. Seller Inventory # 6708

Willems, Les Elzevier, n°381. Seller Inventory # 8789
