About this Item: Johannem Bienayse et Jacobum Ferrebouc Impressorem., París, Francia., 1514. A very rare and early edition (only earlier known edition seems to be Venetian, 1493) of the Commentarium in Quartus Liber Sententiarum (Commentary on the IVth Book of Sentences) by Petrus Paludanus, theologian, bishop and Patriarch of Jerusalem designated by Pope John XXII. The book is still binded in XVI century vellum, presumably original, with the inscription "Petr’ de Palude :" in its spine, in gothic calligraphy. Text entirely in Latin, printed in gothic. Major defects: it lacks of frontpage, an engraved genealogical tree and at least one folium of the prologue. Folium 145 is missing too, being torn. Some pages show markings, underlining and very rarely little marginal notes, made on quill by a XVI or XVII century scholar. Paper and vellum covers are slightly wrinkled, a rather usual feature in books this age. Binding is loose, though we did not restore it, as the spine has been reinforced by a piece of vellum written in manuscript gothic and quite older (almost with certainty medieval) in latin; probably worth to extract and investigate further. Though lacking pages, a very rare copy of one of the most famous works of Petrus Paludanus. On this specific book Oxford scholar and biographer Jean Dunbabin wrote: "In his commentary on the first three books of the Sentences Pierre's sources are easily discovered because he quotes in extenso from his contemporaries, Durand, the Carmelite Guy de Terreni, Hervé de Nédellec and some anonymous tracts. The few original elements are inconspicuous to the casual reader of that formidable bulk. But the commentary on Book 4 is rather different. Although Pierre will have lectured on his before he became a doctor in May 1314, the extant version, which was circulated after examination by the master general of the order, was probably not finalized before the beginning of 1315 at the earliest.32 The subject of Book IV is the sacraments, a theme on which canon lawyers had much to contribute to the standard theological exposition. From the beginning, Pierre seemed more confident, more incisive in his handling of the material. At last he was able to fulfil the promise he had made in the prologue: to embed into the abstract cogitations of sacramental theology the canonists' more practical concerns. And here he must be judged to have succeeded, since what he had to say was appreciated by his contemporaries and read in the schools for many long years afterwards. Modern theologians have placed Pierre's commentary within Dominican tradition, identifying the individual elements in his theological thinking and measuring them in terms of their compatibility with the teaching of St Thomas Aquinas. They usually conclude that he was a very modified Thomist.33 Ecclesiastical historians have shown some interest in his handling of penance and the taxation of satisfactions; and recently in his teachings on sex and marriage have attracted wider attention. But to get the flavour of his whole work we have to go back to a fifteenth-century critic. St Antoninus of Florence, who said, 'I believe there can be found no other com mentary on the Fourth Book of the Sentences which descends so far to practicalities.'34 St Antoninus recognized Pierre's contribution, not as a philosophical treatise for sheltered academics, but rather as a handbook for field-workers. In this light, its historical interest lies both in its biting comments on contemporary affairs and in its summary of the church's teaching on practical morality in the second decade of the fourteenth century." [A hound of God: Pierre de la Palud and the fourteenth-century church, Oxford Press, 1991]. The present edition was made in Paris by the remarkable dominic Vincentius of Haarlem, who annotated and written a prologue. The EXPLICIT of this work reads, literally: Explicit exactissimum et clarissimum opus venerandi patris ac (ver)batissimi doctoris Petri de Palude patriarche iherosolymitani, ordinis fratrum prædicatorum perquam diligentissime recognitu.
