About this Item: London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1897. First Edition., 1897. Large souvenir album celebrating the British Empire at its Victorian zenith. Decorative red cloth, landscape format 35 x 28cm. Pages: viii (including frontis portrait of Queen Victoria, and life of Queen Victoria by Isla Sitwell) + 136 full-page captioned b/w photos of Colonies and Dependencies (including India, Australasia, Africa, Egypt, Canada, Bermuda, Jamaica, Bahamas), and the English Speaking World including America, "constituting the most complete set of views on the subject ever published" (SPCK advertisement, St James Gazette, 5 Nov 1897). Fascinating and not necessarily predictable subject choices including an opium den in San Francisco for example. Rare - just 7 other copies traced, of which 5 on Copac. THE AUTHOR: Isla Sitwell (1840-1908) was author of Poppy and In Far Japan. Her real name was Sidney Mary Beckwith Sitwell (née Wilson). CONDITION: Covers VG, lightly rubbed and worn to the extremities, lightly dusted with a couple of marks. Titles darkening. Paper to front hinge partially cracked, and hinge is a little tender. Binding otherwise secure. Pages near-fine and clean, lightly tanned with occasional spotting and gentle creasing. Creasing to ffep. Free endpapers foxed. Please note - pagination for the illustrated section starts at p3, but binding is secure between adjacent pages viii and 3, and there is no sign of removal. Heavy book. Seller Inventory # 1419
