'A portrait of a remarkable young man, the author's son (aged 24), who is a boat which he bought for a song and completely re-built, set sail in 1977 with Major Bill Tilman (aged 79) from Southampton to Smith Island, one of the South Shetlands, in the Antarctic. The boat En Avant, was skippered by Simon and there were five further crew. They did not return. On November 1st, 1977, En Avant sailed from Rio and was never heard of again.'.
