About this Item: London, John Murray, 1849., 1849. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition thus. Thick 8vo. Full leather, all edges gilt. Chromolithographic title page, section separators, and page frames designed by Owen Jones. Vignette illustrations in the manner of Flaxman throughout. Crest with the motto Franc et Loyal stamped in gold on front and rear boards, and bookplate of original owner, Robert Amédée Heath, with same motto on front pastedown. Marbled endpapers. Binding about very good, boards somewhat worn and scuffed around edges, hinges strengthened, front free endpaper a bit worn along the long free edge. Spine lettered Horatius / Milman / London 1849, the last in a tiny point size at the very base of the spine and a little hard to read. Robert Amédée Heath was a merchant in business in London at the time of publication, so the binding is probably fairly contemporary. Spine is browned and aged more than the boards, but solid; may have been rebacked. 1939 gift inscription on front blank. On verso of the front free endpaper is the bookplate of Ellen V. Becker, a Marlboro, Vermont bookbinder; the bookplate is a woodcut showing a workshop with tools and a stringed instrument. She was presumably responsible for the last refurbishing of the binding. Heavy book, foreign orders may require extra shipping charges. A gorgeous piece of printing. Seller Inventory # 3994

About this Item: Gulielmus Pickering [colophon: excudebat C. Corrall], Londini, 1826. The first work in William Pickering's Diamond Classics miniature series, here in its third issue: a tiny volume of Horace's works, containing "Carminum," "Epodon liber," "Satirarum," "Epistolarum," and "Ars Poetica." The Opera was Corrall and Pickering's first joint project for the series, and was first published in 1820 and then again in 1824. In the present copy, the frontispiece is dated 1828, the engraved title-page 1826, the printed title-page 1824, and the colophon 1826; Kelly does not list either an 1826 or an 1828 issue, but does describe an 1829. While the publication date may be confused, this is certainly the third and final Diamond Classics issue of the work that launched that important series. Binding: 19th-century tan morocco?backed marbled paper?covered boards, spine with gilt-stamped title, gilt-tooled compartments, and gilt-dotted raised bands; upper edges gilt; original silk bookmark present and attached. 32mo (near miniature: 9 cm, 3.5"). Frontis., add. engr. t.-p., 192 pp. Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1829.9; Welsh 3565 (described as 1826); Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), 63. Bound as above, light rubbing to edges and extremities; silk bookmark present as noted, and back free endpaper with attractive small silver Japanese bookseller's ticket. Occasional mild foxing; many signatures unopened. => An attractive copy of a classic miniature in a classic series of them. Seller Inventory # 36942

About this Item: Typis Johannis Baskerville (John Baskerville), 1770. Couverture rigide. - Typis Johannis Baskerville (John Baskerville), Birminghamiae (Birmingham) 1770, in-4 (22x29cm), (1p. tit) 344pp., relié.
