About this Item: Paris and Mecca, 1783. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dates: 1783-1799. 6 volumes, large 8vo. Contemporary French red morocco, smooth spines lettered direct, all edges gilt (some wear to binding extremities, spines a little darkened). These volumes include all of Savary's accounts of his traveld to Egypt and Greece, plus his very important translation of the Koran from the Arabic into French, with a biography of Mohamed; the present set was beautifully bound in the late 18th- or very early 19th-century. Claude-Etienne Savary (1750-1788) was an orientalist, pioneer of Egyptology and translator of Koran. In 1776 he departed for Egypt, and after having remained successively in Alexandria and Cairo, he explored (for nearly two years) several islands of Greece and the Archipelago, in particular those of Rhodes. Savary provided many details concerning the daily life of the population. A fluent speaker of Arabic, Savary's sensitive and vibrant account is a contrast striking with the austere description by Volney which appeared two years later. Savary's was the first literary voyage in Egypt, undertaken long before Chateaubriand, Lamartine or Flaubert. Paris: Bleuet jeune, Paris An VII (1798). 8vo. Three volumes. 2 ff., xvi, 398 pp.; 2 ff., 291 pp., 2 ff.; 330 pp., 1 f. PRINTED ON FINE PAPER. "Nouvelle edition," revised and corrected. The learned description of Egypt (ancient and contemporary) by Claude Savary, which is notable for its extensive quotations of scarce and almost unknown Arabian writers. Illustrated with four folding, engraved plates: three maps, and one plan of the interior of the Great Pyramid. Savary travelled to Egypt from 1776 to 1779, and spoke Arabic. The first two volumes constitute the particulars of the voyage; the third is devoted to his study of the Egyptian religion and mythology, and is based on Arabian texts. WITH: LETTRES SUR LA GRECE pour servir de suite a celles de l'Egypte. Paris, Bleuet jeune, An VII (1798). 8vo. 2 ff., 382 pp. PRINTED ON FINE PAPER. Bound with: Les Amours d'Anas-Eloujoud et Ouardi. Conte traduit de l'arabe par Claude Savary. Ouvrage posthume. Paris, Bluet, 1799. 8vo. 2 ff., 58 pp., 1 f. PRINTED ON FINE PAPER. * Savary left Egypt in September 1779 to continue his travels in Greece and Asia Minor, where he spent nearly two years. His letters on Greece are descriptive of the places and inhabitants, especially the Dodecanese. This is a beautifully printed account of Savary's voyage to Alexandria, relating especially to the island of Rhodes, and Crete, decorated with a folding map and folding plate. Weber 584. Atabey 1092; Blackmer 1493 (first edition). WITH: [Claude Savary, translator]. LE CORAN, traduit de l'Arabe, accompagne de notes, et precede d'un abrege de la VIE DE MAHOMET. A la Mecque, l'an de l'Hegire 1165 [i.e. Paris 1783]. THREE WORKS IN TWO VOLUMES. 8vo. xvi, 230 pp., 269, [1] pp.; [4], 464, [4] pp. Some minor foxing. * First edition of this important, and highly enlightened translation, the second attempt to translate the Koran into French. According to Norman Daniel, this would have certainly been in the luggage of Napoleon when he went to Egypt (see: Daniel, "Islam and the West," p. 313). Savary is usually accredited with having introduced the word Koran (instead of Al Coran) as the standard (see his note 1 in the Preface). He prepared his translation in Egypt where he stayed from 1776 to 1779. In his opinion one could not separate the Koran from its surroundings, thus living in an Muslim environment would benefit his translation. Savary not only, as Daniel phrases it, "humanises and romanticises the old familiar way of looking at the Prophet" (p. 313), he also furthered and qu. Seller Inventory # 931

About this Item: Bath Printed by S. Hazard for J. Johnson, Vernor and Hood, Ogilvy and Speare et al 1795, 1795. 2 volumes. An early and very scarce printing of George Sale's great English translation. With three engraved genealogical tables (two folding), a map and a folding plate featuring a view and the plan of the Temple of Mecca, all as in the first edition. 8vo, very handsome full contemporary speckled calf, compartments of the spines elegantly decorated in elaborate panel designs with gilt decorated bands and fine central gilt ornamental devices, gilt rolled border designs, two compartments with contrasting red and green morocco labels ruled and lettered in gilt, board edges gilt stippled, covers with roll tooled borders gilt, marbled endleaves. Vol. I: xii, (2), 266, Table 14 pp. ; Vol. II: (8), 519, Table 12 pp. An especially fine and exceptionally handsome set in beautiful contemporary bindings. The bindings are in excellent condition, the text blocks and paper remain fresh, clean, unpressed and in beautiful condition, near as pristine. VERY RARE IN THIS CONDITION. Sale's version, originally published some years earlier, is the best early translation of the Islamic holy book, and the first English translation taken directly from the original Arabic. The only translation published previous to Sale's was "the despicable French version" of André Du Ryer, issued in 1649, and Alexander Ross published an English version derived from Du Ryer's in the same year. Sale’s intent in translating the Koran was seemingly to educate English readers (and perhaps those in power) about Islam in an atmosphere of what he perceived to be ignorance and intolerance: ".it seems as if there was something more than what is vulgarly imagined, in a religion which has made so surprising a progress." He states, ".as Mohammed gave his Arabs the best religion he could, as well as the best laws, preferable, at least, to those of the ancient pagan lawgivers, I confess I cannot see why he deserves not equal respect, though not with Moses or Jesus Christ, whose laws came really from heaven, yet with Minos or Numa, notwithstanding the distinction of a learned writer, who seems to think it a greater crime to make use of an imposture to set up a new religion, founded on the acknowledgment of one true God, and to destroy idolatry, than to use the same means to gain reception to rules and regulations for the more orderly practice of heathenism already established." He goes on to argue that ".if the religious and civil Institutions of foreign nations are worth our knowledge, those of Mohammed, the lawgiver of the Arabians, and founder of an empire, which, in less than a century, spread itself over a greater part of the world than the Romans were ever masters of, must needs be so.". About this Item: Printed for Charles Daly, London, 1838. Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. 8vo; xiv, [2], 133, 471, [1]pp, with all five plates present and in superb condition: frontispiece of a folding view and plan of the Temple of Mecca; three genealogical tables (2 folding), and a folding map of Arabia and the surrounding countries. Original green cloth, the sides stamped in blind with acanthus leaf designs and borders, the spine lettered in gilt, very expertly rebacked by Fitterer. Provenance: bookplate of Standish McCleary, bearing the motto, "Faciendi Plures Libros Nullus Est Finis," to the front fly leaf. A rare survival (WorldCat lists only six copies), the contents clean and bright, the binding tight and secure with no loose or missing pages. OCLC Number: 505118764. Sale's translation, originally published in 1734, remained the most widely available English rendition for more than 200 years, and is still widely available today, with the recent release of an electronic edition for the Kindle. Sale provided numerous notes and a "Preliminary Discourse" manifesting in-depth knowledge of Eastern habits, manners, traditions, and laws. According to the ODNB, as late as 1921, "Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had not been superseded by any subsequent translation, and that his discourse still remained the best introduction in any European language to the study of Islam. More than fifty years later Sale's objectivity still guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978)." Remarkable, considering that Sale's translation was only the second English version, the first, in 1649, coming from the pen of Alexander Ross, and was not based on the original Arabic (as was Sale's), but was on a French version by André du Ryer, the French consul in Alexandria. Sale's presumed partiality to Islam made his translation controversial, but it found an "appreciative readership among the scholars and philosophers of the British and continental Enlightenment." Edward Gibbon, who knew no oriental languages, used Sale's translation and 'preliminary discourse' in compiling the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and Voltaire owned a copy of the original 1734 edition.". About this Item: [Kehl] Imprimerie De La Societe Litteraire-Typographique, 1784., 1784. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1784 Voltaire Spirit of Nations ISLAM Muslim Turkey Mohammed Quran Charlemagne “Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.” Voltaire A rare late-18th-century printing of Voltaire’s “Essay on the Manners and Spirit of Nations.” This work, originally written in 1756, deals with the history of Europe before the time of Charlemagne through the start of the reign of King Louis XIV. Voltaire, most-known for his theatrical works, devoted several chapters of this work to the history of Islam and its influence in European culture, particularly Arabian and Turkish courts. Voltaire, somewhat controversially, compared Arabs to the ancient Hebrews, noting Mohammed as a poet, and their treatment of God. However, this treatment of Islam in European culture was predominantly critical and negative. Voltaire had strong feelings against Muslim culture particularly to the Quran, which he claims, ‘ignored the laws of physics.’ (Gunny, Images of Islam) Item number: #751 Price: $499 VOLTAIRE Oeuvres completes de Voltaire Essai sur les moeurs et l’esprit des nations [Kehl] Imprimerie De La Societe Litteraire-Typographique, 1784.
