About this Item: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Limited, London, 1896. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 4 vols. London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Limited, 1896. viii, [2], 391; [vi], 407; viii, 414, [1]; viii, 340. 8vo. Publisher's tan cloth binding with gilt lettering and embossed ornamentation to spine and gilt and embossed ornamentation to boards. Ex library with usual marks (1 circular stamp to the foot of each title page, stickers to some of the front pastedowns, 1 security sticker per volume within pages). Spines slightly bumped and rubbed, slightly slanted, page margins very slightly browned, hinges becoming tender. A very rare early copy of this fundamental 4-volume study of the Quran. The text is important not only for being one of the first comprehensive commentaries of the Quran in English, but also in the broader context of the history of Christian-Muslim relations. Its author, Elwood Morris Wherry (1843-1927), was a Christian theologian, and his commentary on the Quran stemmed from his work on an edition he issued of the Quran in Roman Urdu intended for use by missionaries in India. The Koran Commonly called The Alcoran of: QUR'AN; English) SALE,

About this Item: London: Thomas Tegg and Co., 1838, 1838. Octavo. Original publisher's cloth, title gilt to spine, panels to boards in blind, yellow surface paper endpapers. Spine somewhat toned and rubbed at top and bottom, tips bumped, title page a little foxed. A very good copy. "View of the Temple of Mecca" bound as frontispiece, folding map, two folding charts and one single page chart bound at rear. New edition of the second and most authoritative English version of the Koran, first published in 1734, with the bookplate of James Grove Wood, barrister and High Sheriff of County Donegal, 1855. George Sale (c.1696–1736), although a solicitor by profession, was also a leading orientalist, having acted as corrector to the SPCK's Arabic translation of the New Testament (1727). His translation is prefixed by a long "preliminary discourse", a compendium of all that was known about the religion of Islam, itself separately translated into and published in several languages. Sale was textually indebted to the 1698 Latin translation of Ludovico Marracci, confessor to Pope Innocent XI, but unlike Marracci, Sale was convinced of the sincerity of Muhammad's intentions, though he remained eager to secure the conversion of the Muslims to Protestant Christianity. Sale's presumed partiality to Islam earned him the criticism of his orthodox contemporaries, and probably led to a breach with the SPCK, but scholars like Gibbon (whose treatment of Arabian history and Islam in his Decline and Fall relies heavily on Sale), Voltaire, and Lessing valued him highly. In 1921 Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had not yet been superseded, and more than fifty years later Sale's objectivity still guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978). About this Item: Printed for Charles Daly, London, 1838. Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. 8vo; xiv, [2], 133, 471, [1]pp, with all five plates present and in superb condition: frontispiece of a folding view and plan of the Temple of Mecca; three genealogical tables (2 folding), and a folding map of Arabia and the surrounding countries. Original green cloth, the sides stamped in blind with acanthus leaf designs and borders, the spine lettered in gilt, very expertly rebacked by Fitterer. Provenance: bookplate of Standish McCleary, bearing the motto, "Faciendi Plures Libros Nullus Est Finis," to the front fly leaf. A rare survival (WorldCat lists only six copies), the contents clean and bright, the binding tight and secure with no loose or missing pages. OCLC Number: 505118764. Sale's translation, originally published in 1734, remained the most widely available English rendition for more than 200 years, and is still widely available today, with the recent release of an electronic edition for the Kindle. Sale provided numerous notes and a "Preliminary Discourse" manifesting in-depth knowledge of Eastern habits, manners, traditions, and laws. According to the ODNB, as late as 1921, "Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had not been superseded by any subsequent translation, and that his discourse still remained the best introduction in any European language to the study of Islam. More than fifty years later Sale's objectivity still guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978)." Remarkable, considering that Sale's translation was only the second English version, the first, in 1649, coming from the pen of Alexander Ross, and was not based on the original Arabic (as was Sale's), but was on a French version by André du Ryer, the French consul in Alexandria. Sale's presumed partiality to Islam made his translation controversial, but it found an "appreciative readership among the scholars and philosophers of the British and continental Enlightenment." Edward Gibbon, who knew no oriental languages, used Sale's translation and 'preliminary discourse' in compiling the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and Voltaire owned a copy of the original 1734 edition.". About this Item: London, William Tegg., 1869. 8°. Folded Frontispiece Illustration with original tissue-guard, XI, 516 pages including Index. Original Hardcover. Green cloth withgilt lettering on spine and frontcover. Beautifully, professionally rebacked with basically no trace of the repair. Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. Text very clean. Binding firm. New endpapers. Bound with original endpapers. The very rare and often missing plan of the Beit Allah or Mosque at Mecca in excellent condition ! George Sale (1697, Canterbury, Kent, England – 1736, London, England) was an Orientalist and practising solicitor, best known for his 1734 translation of the Qur'an into English. He was also author of The General Dictionary, in ten volumes, folio. He was educated at the King's School, Canterbury, and in 1720 became a student of the Inner Temple. It is known that he trained as a solicitor in his early years but took time off from his legal pursuits, returning at need to his profession. Sale was an early member of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Sale became seriously ill for eight days before his death, and died at Surrey Street, The Strand, of fever on November 13, 1736. Sale was buried at St. Clement Danes. His family consisted of a wife and five children. He took the time to apply himself in the study of the eastern and other languages, both ancient and modern. Carolus Dadichi, the king's interpreter, helped Sale in his studies of oriental dialects. Sale reputedly spent 25 years in Arabia, thus acquiring his knowledge of the Arabic language and customs; this was the basis of Voltaire's statements in the Dictionnaire Philosophique (articles ‘Alcoran,’ ‘Arot and Marot’). On the other hand Harold Lyon Thomson, writing in the Dictionary of National Biography, stated that he never left his native country. In 1734, Sale published the translation of the Qur'an, dedicated to John Lord Carteret. Sale provided numerous notes and a "Preliminary Discourse" which was manifest with in-depth knowledge of Eastern habits, manners, traditions, and laws. Voltaire bestowed high praise on Sale's version of the Koran. Sale did not, however, place Islam at an equal level with Christianity. He stated: "As Mohammed gave his Arabs the best religion he could, preferable, at least, to those of the ancient pagan lawgivers, I confess I cannot see why he deserves not equal respect, though not with Moses or Jesus Christ, whose laws came really from heaven, yet with Minos or Numa, notwithstanding the distinction of a learned writer, who seems to think it a greater crime to make use of an imposture to set up a new religion, founded on the acknowledgment of one true God, and to destroy idolatry, than to use the same means to gain reception to rules and regulations for the more orderly practice of heathenism already established." Sale's translation of the Qu'ran has been reprinted into modern times. In January 2007, Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to the United States Congress, was sworn in on an old edition of Sale's Koran, donated to the Library of Congress in the early 19th century by Thomas Jefferson. Sale was also a corrector of the Arabic New Testament (1726) issued by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. He acquired a library with valuable rare manuscripts of Persian, Turkish, and Arabic origins (which is now held in the Bodleian Library, Oxford). (Wikipedia). Seller Inventory # 27501AB

About this Item: [Kehl] Imprimerie De La Societe Litteraire-Typographique, 1784., 1784. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1784 Voltaire Spirit of Nations ISLAM Muslim Turkey Mohammed Quran Charlemagne “Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.” Voltaire A rare late-18th-century printing of Voltaire’s “Essay on the Manners and Spirit of Nations.” This work, originally written in 1756, deals with the history of Europe before the time of Charlemagne through the start of the reign of King Louis XIV. Voltaire, most-known for his theatrical works, devoted several chapters of this work to the history of Islam and its influence in European culture, particularly Arabian and Turkish courts. Voltaire, somewhat controversially, compared Arabs to the ancient Hebrews, noting Mohammed as a poet, and their treatment of God. However, this treatment of Islam in European culture was predominantly critical and negative. Voltaire had strong feelings against Muslim culture particularly to the Quran, which he claims, ‘ignored the laws of physics.’ (Gunny, Images of Islam) Item number: #751 Price: $499 VOLTAIRE Oeuvres completes de Voltaire Essai sur les moeurs et l’esprit des nations [Kehl] Imprimerie De La Societe Litteraire-Typographique, 1784.
