L'image des "cippes", petites stèles funéraires ou votives très répandues chez les Anciens, indique qu'il s'agit là d'un recueil posthume : Pierre Gilbert (1884-1914) ayant été tué au cours de la bataille de la Marne. Ce jeune dandy, disciple de Maurras et ami d'Eugène Marsan (auquel renvoient les initiales "E.M." de l'introduction), donnait des portraits littéraires à la Revue Critique des Idées et des Livres (bulletin fondé en avril 1908) et tenait le feuilleton dramatique de L'Action Française. Dans la Revue des Jeunes du 25 octobre 1919, Robert Vallery-Radot rendit à ce bel essayiste trop tôt disparu l'hommage que voici : "La personne de Gilbert, sa voix, son exemple ont l'éloquence précise d'un symbole. Nous le verrons toujours, Persée étincelant qui court délivrer son Andromède, l'Intelligence qu'un monstre menace de dévorer.
