First edition, first printing of the seventh book in the Raggedy Ann series, featuring a Paper Dragon inspired by Chinese New Year - in the original box. First acclaimed on the scene of the Sunday comics with "Mr. Twee Deedle," Gruelle launched into fame with his Raggedy Ann series. The books were based upon a rag doll he had designed with bright red hair, though Gruelle "always considered Raggedy Ann and Andy to be, first and foremost, storybook characters, whose personas had been born and refined on the printed page" (Hall 17). Mixing the down to earth with the witty, the Raggedy Ann and Andy series also blend charming images for children with a Jazz Age sensibility. PAPER DRAGON is "a parable about fathers who leave and are later reunited with their families." This is a remarkably nice copy. 9'' x 6''. Original color pictorial boards. In original color pictorial box. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Gruelle in color throughout. Publisher's ads at rear. [96] pages. Only a few touches of rubbing and bumping to spine ends and corners. Box with light wear and toning. Joints firm. Bright. Near fine in very good plus box.

Gruelle, Justin C. (illustrator). Four quarto volumes. (60)pp. each. Illustrated throughout in color and black & white. This set of four volumes come from the McLoughlin Bros. series "The Little Color Classics," with the titles "Raggedy Ann Helps Grandpa Hoppergrass" (#843), "Raggedy Ann and the Hoppy Toad" (#844), "Raggedy Andy Goes Sailing" (#883), and "The Camel with the Wrinkled Knees" (#884). They mark the first Raggedy Ann stories printed after the death of their creator, Johnny Gruelle, in 1938. The "J. Gruelle" who signs the illustrations is thus the creator's brother, Justin C. Gruelle. Though all these books appear in Patricia Hall's 2001 bibliography of Gruelle, they are listed separately, without the box in which these are housed. Additionally, none of the books appear in the McLoughlin Brothers price list for 1940-1941. While #883 and #884 do appear in the price list for 1943, it is unclear whether the record refers to these particular volumes or to the 1943 editions of the same texts. The green open-top box shows Raggedy Ann on the front and bears a 1940 copyright and a McLoughlin Bros. series number of 1032. In its complete form, this set is particularly rare. Bumps to corners and some wear to extremities, wear and creasing to box, else near fine. (Hall, 137-138).

Condition: Fine in very good plus box. Beautiful copy of this mystery story in the Raggedy Ann series, an early printing (with no known differentiation between first and early printings, per bibliographer Patricia Hall). Bibliographer Patricia Hall notes that "by 1928, Volland had abandoned" its traditional approach to marking later printings (which they called "editions"), and as a result, "one cannot assume that these Volland books of the late 1920s and early 1930s were first[s] just because they happen to be unstated" (Bibliography, 69). This is a lovely copy in exceptionally beautiful condition. 9'' x 6''. Original color pictorial boards with black cloth spine. In original color pictorial box. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Gruelle in color throughout. Publisher's ads at rear listing 11 Raggedy Ann books. 94, [2] pages. Faint pencil inscription to base of box. With contemporary Volland promotional bookmark laid in. Light edgewear to box.
