About this Item: Boston, MA: The Stratford Company, 1925, 1st Edition, First Printing, Boston, Massachussetts, 1925. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good (see description). Dust Jacket Condition: Fine ( FACSIMILE ). Frank R Paul (illustrator). First Edition. -----------hardcover, a solid Very Good to Very Good+ example with a wee bit of rubbing and age darkening to the edges of the boards and spine tips, the binding is completely square and tight, a bit of rubbing to the blue cloth ---this copy has been signed "Sincerely yours Hugo Gernsback", the signature shows two distinct ink types but this is likely because the book was signed at a signing event or convention where the promoter/organizer penned YOURS SINCERELY and would then hand off the book to HG for autographing, this two ink signing format is quite common (nonetheless Gernsback's signature is not common ! ), quite scarce in the 1st edition but really quite rare to be found signed --- in a Fine FACSIMILE dust jacket with that super Paul cover art of a sort of television or video phone, as well all 11 plates by Paul are present, this copy is Priority A as per Currey with the publishers name on the spine measuring 1 1/2 cm vs priority B which measures 2 cm, no priority established, blue cloth with just a bit of wear, Gernsback's book is considered the true beginning of 20th century science fiction, Gernsback believed in the perpetual advancememt of mankind towards greater and greater inventions and conveniences, ---as mentioned in Bleiler ----"The literary treatment is on a very low level, but RALPH 124C 41+ is renowned for its many highly imaginative technological projections. These include clear descriptions of radar, book & newspaper microfilms & microfiches, television, plant hormones, wireless transmission of power." ---.many things which today we take for granted, .--- true expression of his personal philosophy of man's triumph over all around him the book is largely unreadable today but remains a cornerstone of any serious science fiction collection, Gernsback originally serialized RALPH in his MODERN ELECTRICS magazine, shortly after the appearance of RALPH in book form Gernsback began AMAZING STORIES ---arguably one of the most successful pulp magazines ever, --- today we remember Gernsback with the annual HUGO AWARDS which are named after him, ---this copy has an ink name on the front blank endpaper, name is P M Millman who is likely the Canadian astronomer Peter Mackenzie Millman, I suspect that this copy was his during his younger days before he went on to be a world renowned astonomer, not 100% certain but it is likely that a future astronomer had a keen interest in early science fiction, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo. About this Item: The Stratford Company, Boston, 1925. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front end paper: "With the compliments of the author H Gernsback 1925." Bookplate on the front paste down of Gilson Willets. A scarce, contemporary presentation copy by one of the fathers of science fiction, the founder of the magazine "Amazing Stories." The annual Science Fiction awards are named Hugos in his honor. A Very Good copy of the book straight and square, although the spine ends and corners are lightly worn. Chips to the corners of the first few pages, including the title page, but withal a decent copy, complete with eleven tipped in plate. While the novel is generally dismissed by critics today, it foreshadowed many modern technological advances with "clear descriptions of radar, book and newspaper microfilms and microfiches, television, plant hormones, wireless transmission of power, etc." (Bleiler, p. 282). One of the cornerstones of a science fiction collection. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 1083

About this Item: Boston: The Stratford Company, 1925, 1925. First Edition. Minute wear; very nearly fine copy in a dust jacket with very light wear and soiling. Better known as an editor (Amazing Stories) than he was as a writer, Gernsback was more interested in scientific prophecy than he was in plot or characterization, and consequently, his prose is not especially praiseworthy. Nevertheless, it is conceded to be an important book in the history of science fiction. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted. Seller Inventory # 31902
