With the original classic illustrations by Frederic Remington. ***Near fine in illustrated card covers. Front cover slightly marked. Extremities creased, rubbed and nicked. Back cover slightly creased at the top edge. Covers clean. No tears. No fading. Internally fine without any inscriptions. ***220 mm x 155 mm. 186 pages. ***''What do we really know of the life of the Cowboy and the Indian of the old frontier, the hunters and trappers, the mountain men, the sheriff and the outlaw, the Cheyenne and the Sioux, the countless lesser tribes of the great plains? Undoubtedly our perception of this period and these people is coloured by the Hollywood vision of the cowboy folk-hero and the redskin brave fighting it out against a spectacular natural backdrop and big skies. But was it really like this? ***For a true picture it is necessary to go back to the narratives of people who actually experienced this life and in "Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail' we have exactly that. For Theodore Roosevelt, later to become one of the most "roaringly popular" presidents of the United States, was a cowboy. This was the real Wild West and in Frederick Remington, Roosevelt found the perfect artist to illustrate the life he describes. Both words and pictures are the result of direct experience and take the reader right into the heart of one of the most colourful and fascinating periods in history. ' (Quote taken from the back cover). ***No American president has been closer to the working life of the West than Theodore Roosevelt. From 1884 to 1886 he built up his ranch on the Little Missouri in Dakota Territory, accepting the inevitable toil and hardships. He met the unique characters of the Bad Lands-mountain men, degenerate buffalo hunters, Indians, and cowboys-and observed their changes as the West became more populated. Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail describes Roosevelt's routine labor and extraordinary adventures, including a stint as a deputy sheriff pursuing three horse thieves through the cold of winter. Whether recounting stories of cowboy fights or describing his hunting of elk, antelope, and bear, the book expresses his lifelong delight in physical hardihood and tests of nerve. ***A well produced reproduction of this classic 19th century work by Theodore Roosevelt, who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909, in nice collectable condition. *** For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions that are true to the original work. No American president has been closer to the working life of the West than Theodore Roosevelt. From 1884 to 1886 he built up his ranch on the Little Missouri in Dakota Territory, accepting the inevitable toil and hardships. He met the unique characters of the Bad Landsâ "mountain men, degenerate buffalo hunters, Indians, and cowboysâ "and observed their changes as the West became more populated. Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail describes Roosevelt's routine labor and extraordinary adventures, including a stint as a deputy sheriff pursuing three horse thieves through the cold of winter. Recounting stories of cowboy fights or describing his hunting of elk, antelope, and bear, the book expresses his lifelong delight in physical hardihood and tests of nerve. Roosevelt emerged as a leader of the Republican Party and became a driving force for Progressive Era policies in the U. S. in the early 20th century. He integrated his exuberant personality, vast range of interests, and world-famous achievements into a "cowboy" persona defined by robust masculinity. After the death of his first wife, Roosevelt set off to the frontier, eventually settling his own ranch in the Dakota Territory. Roosevelt records, with obvious joy, his experiences on the ranch, from the people (and animals) that he meets, his adventures on the hunt, the excitement of the round up, to the everyday life on the ranch. "If I had not spent my year in North Dakota, I would never have become President of the United States," declared Theodore Roosevelt. The future statesman took his first steps toward the highest office in the land in the Dakota Badlands of the 1880s, where he began his transformation from aristocrat to democrat. Roosevelt left his home in the East as Theodore, but he returned as "Teddy," a rugged outdoorsman and soon-to-be hero of the Rough Riders. Recounted with infectious enthusiasm, Roosevelt's tales range from ranching on the open plains to hunting in the mountains. His reminiscences conjure up the vanished world of the frontier, with thrilling accounts of chasing bighorn sheep and horse thieves, encountering Indians, branding cattle, and bronco busting. Roosevelt's recollections helped elevate the cowboy's image from that of an ordinary farm laborer into a figure of nobility and courage. The works of Frederic Remington, another great mythmaker of the Old West, illustrate these memoirs. Sixty-five black-and-white images by this renowned American artist complement Roosevelt's stories of freedom and self-reliance. Reprint of title first published in 1896.

No American president has been closer to the working life of the West than Theodore Roosevelt. The book expresses his lifelong delight in physical hardihood and tests of nerve. Frederic Sackrider Remington (October 4, 1861 - December 26, 1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in the genre of Western American Art. His works are known for depicting the Western United States in the last quarter of the 19th century and featuring such images as cowboys, American Indians, and the US Cavalry. Remington received a commission to do eighty-three illustrations for a book by Theodore Roosevelt, Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail to be serialized in The Century Magazine before publication. The 29-year-old Roosevelt had a similar Western adventure to Remington, losing money on a ranch in North Dakota the previous year but gaining experience which made him an "expert" on the West. The assignment gave Remington's career a big boost and forged a lifelong connection with Roosevelt. Sir Edmund Giles Loder, 2nd Baronet (7 August 1849 - 14 April 1920) was an English aristocrat, landowner and plantsman. His father was Sir Robert Loder, 1st Baronet, a landowner and Conservative politician. He was educated at Eton College and graduated from Trinity College, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. Loder was active as a plant collector, breeder and grower. He developed hybrid rhododendrons. The plants were named the Loderi hybrids and group in his honour. Three, Loderi King George, Loderi Pink Diamond and Loder's White, have received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Presumed First U.K. Edition, First printing.

".Roosevelt records his experiences from his hunting adventures, the people and animals that he encounters, the excitement of the round up, to the everyday life on the ranch." (Boone and Crockett Club) ".Roosevelt was at work in the New York state legislature attempting to get a government reform bill passed when he was summoned home by his family. He returned home to find his mother, Mittie, had succumbed to typhoid fever. On the same day, his wife of four years, Alice Lee, died of Bright's disease, a severe kidney ailment. Only two days before her death, Alice Lee had given birth to the couple's daughter, Alice. The double tragedy devastated Roosevelt. He ordered those around him not to mention his wife's name. Burdened by grief, he abandoned politics, left the infant Alice with his sister Bamie, and, at the end of 1884, struck out for the Dakota territories, where he lived as a rancher and worked as a sheriff for two years. When not engrossed in raising cattle or acting as the local lawman, Roosevelt found time to indulge his passion for reading and writing history. After a blizzard wiped out his prized herd of cattle in 1885, Roosevelt decided to return to eastern society. Once back in New York in 1886, he again took up politics." and returned to his daughter Alice. (History Channel) This book is the story of Roosevelt's self-imposed relegation to the rhythms and rigors of ranch life, marvelously illustrated by the pen and ink drawings of Frederic Remington.
