In the Algebra, al- Khayyam sets out to deal systematically with all fourteen types of cubic equations. He solves each one in sequence again through the use of intersecting conic sections. In an algebra where powers of x corresponded to geometrical dimensions, the solution of cubic equations was the apex of the discipline. Nevertheless, even here al- Khayyam was able to advance algebra by considering its unknowns as dimension-free abstractions of continuous quantities. 15 Khayyam also considers circumstances under which certain cubic equations have more than one solution. Although he does not handle this topic perfectly, his effort nevertheless stood out from previous efforts. A geometric solution to a cubic equation may seem peculiar to modern eyes, but the study of cubic equations (and indeed much of medieval algebra) was motivated by geometric problems. Khayyam was nevertheless explicitly aware that the arithmetic problem of the cubic remained to be solved. He never produced such a solution; nor did anyone else until Gerolamo Cardano in the mid-16th century.#H2027.

Noth, Buchblock teilw. geklebt. - Gesammelte Werke. Al-Watwat, (d. 578/1182), a bilingual poet, philologist, and prose writer in Persian and Arabic, as well as a high-ranking official of the Khwarazmian court in the 12th century. There is considerable data on his biography, with the Dictionary of Learned Men by Yaqut (d. 1229) as the earliest source. As a chief secretary of the Kvarazmsahan, Watwat engaged in diplomatic correspondence with the caliphs and their officials (in Arabic), and with the court of Sanjar and some local rulers (in Persian). The author himself compiled a book of highly embellished prose resalas in both languages, under the title of ?Ara?es al-Khawater wa nafa?es al-nawader; nine Arabic and nine Persian letters are included into his Abkar al-afkar fi'l-rasa?el wa'l-a??ar; a later collection titled Rasa?el ?Arabi is also extant. His Persian epistles have been edited by K. Toyserkani (Rashid-al-Din Watwat, Namaha, Tehran, 1960); a representative selection of his Arabic output (this work) was published by Mohammad Fahmi (Majmu?at rasa?el Ra?id-al-Din al-Wa?wa?, 2 parts, Cairo, 1315/1897-8). Al-Hamadhani (968-1008 CE) was given the nickname ??Badi' al-Zaman?? (The Wonder of the Age) in recognition of his mastery of Arabic prose in the high style. Although he wrote a number of works, including a set of rasa'il (epistles), he is remembered chiefly as the writer who managed to combine different narrative features into an entirely new genre: the maqamah (the name of the genre being derived from the idea of ??standing??, and thus perhaps contrasted with the institution of majlis, a name that implies an ??evening session??). #35315.
