The play, adapted from the author's own novel, was first performed at the Manchester Opera House with a cast which included Margaret Rutherford and Celia Johnson. It provided the basis for Hitchcock's film version. On the front cover is the ownership signature of C.R. Ashbee (1863-1942), a leading light in the Arts and Crafts Movement. Strange to relate, Du Maurier's grandfather George had been in the habit of mercilessly lampooning Ashbee and his colleagues in his cartoons for the magazine Punch.Cheap paper faintly tanned.
