About this Item: Houghton, Mifflin & Company, Boston & New York, 1903. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. [340pp]: [ii], x, 328; gilt ribbed wine cloth; 182 x 127 x 28 mm. Blanck's conjectured third (or possibly second) state of the sheets [BAL 22632]: reading "Don't go to the side door" (325:9); & "in the October sun" (327:13). However in an unrecorded type-only wine binding with no publisher's imprint at all on spine, measuring 7-3/16" in height (rather than 7-5/16") & employing wove endleaves. Two-colour title-page bears the 1903 date with "Published October 1903" verso (including the extra space in the date). Inscribed by Canadian poet William Henry Drummond on flyleaf: "Mrs G.M. Jacques: With Xmas Greetings from Dr & Mrs Drummond Xmas 1904." An inscription which raises the possibility that the present binding may represent a less elaborate (thereby less expensive) dressing for export to Canada. It bears noting that a dream the poet had that Christmas Eve (1904) resulted in the composition of one of his best-loved poems, 'The Last Portage'. A relatively clean copy (with intermittent foxing) in bright binding with all gilt fresh. Lacking ffe, with hinges started. Seller Inventory # 002466

About this Item: Houghton Mifflin, 1903. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Just the slightest of edgewear to the base of spine, and the top edge is a little dusty. Otherwise the book itself, with line thirteen of page three twenty seven reading " bricks, glowing in the October sun.", is flawed only by light offsetting from the dust jacket flaps. Although separated at folds, all panels of the jacket are present. The lower two thirds of the jacket's spine are absent ( below the books title ). The rear panel has minor chipping to the top edge, and the front panel has a quarter inch strip missing for slightly more than three inches, and an irregular tear/chip extending down approximately one third of the spine-side front panel. Despite the flaws noted, an exceptionally bright and attractive copy in an exceedingly scarce dust jacket. The first edition, published by Houghton Mifflin in 1903. Seller Inventory # 000015

About this Item: Grosset & Dunlop, New York, NY U.S.A., 1903. Hardcover. Condition: Good+. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is a classic American 1903 children's novel by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The irrepressible 10-year-old Rebecca Rowena Randall burst into the world of children's book characters (and her new life in Maine) in 1903 when storybook girls were gentle and proper. Rebecca Rowena Randall goes to live with her two stern aunts in the village of Riverboro in Maine. A "bird of a very different feather," she had "a small, plain face illuminated by a pair of eyes carrying such messages, such suggestions, such hints of sleeping power and insight, that one never tired of looking into their shining depths. " Soon enough, she wins over her prim Aunt Miranda, the whole town, and thousands of readers everywhere with her energetic, indomitable spirit. Rebecca Rowena Randall was such an appealing fictional character that she was portrayed by Mary Pickford in the 1917 Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm movie, then by Shirley Temple in the 1937 version. Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856¿1923) was an American educator and author of children's stories, most notably this classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the Silver Street Free Kindergarten). With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labor and the notion and experience of "childhood" was mostly non-existent. This copy has stated traits of a first edition. In particular: p325 "Don't turn in at the side"; p327 ".in the October Sun"; the publisher's name printed with letters 0.125" high on spine; the front cover has an illustration pasted down and the copyright page states published October, 1902, but no date published is stated on title page. Issued without dust jacket. Copy has no illustrations. Hardcover has green cloth boards embossed with illustration pasted to front cover, lettering & designs in hunter green with orange flowers on spine, but no DJ. Interior has torn front gutter with weak rear gutter, but binding complete with no loose pages. POS on ffep (adds no value), pages foxing with handling smudges, damp stain on lower page edges but no markings within text. Copyright 1903, stated published October, 1902. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. No advertising in book. Prior Owner Name No Value. Seller Inventory # 007268
