About this Item: Chelsea House Publishers, New York, 1965. Pictorial cover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: None. Edward Gorey (illustrator). First Edition. Hardcover. Oblong octavo. 47 pages. Book Condition: Very Good. Printed paper over boards. Some sun fading on spine with $2 price sticker in lower right front corner. No dust jacket In a November 12, 2009 article in The New York Times by Jennifer Schuessler on the republication of this out-of-print Gorey title she wrote "Last January, an anonymous poster at LiveJournal put up a complete scan of what seemed to be a forgotten book by Edward Gorey, "The Recently Deflowered Girl: The Right Thing to Say on Every Dubious Occasion," a retro etiquette manual credited to one Hyacinthe Phypps. The post drew so many hits that it crashed the site, and the book shot to the top of BookFinder com’s list of the most searched-for out-of-print books. She also wrote, "as it turns out, someone else wrote "The Recently Deflowered Girl." The perfectly Goreyesque nom de plume Hyacincthe Phypps actually belongs to Mel Juffe, a veteran of Radio Free Europe, Eye magazine and The New York Post who died in 2005. " Juffe wrote the "Editor's Note" at the beginning of the book. Seller Inventory # 500

About this Item: Arlington Books, London, 1965. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. 47 pages (complete). A wonderful book of advice for young women on the politesse of reply after losing their virginity in 'unusual' places. Here one can learn the correct thing to say on being deflowered by Valentino during a Seance, by proxy (!), by a famous crooner or during an American Express tour in the Latin Quarter by an alluring dancer. The discreet but happy dustjacket is enclosed in a clear cellophane protective jacket. The dj is worn and scuffed but still amiable and sweet. The board covers are bright and almost virginal. The contents have evidence of avid readership. Nonetheless the pages are clean, clear, goodhearted, reminiscent of Victoria Mather, mischievous and utterly delightful. fk. Seller Inventory # awau
