About this Item: The Whitaker and Ray Company, San Francisco, 1895. Hardcover. First edition. Good. A wonderful late 19th century treatise on the art of public speaking. Excellent, vibrant color plates, along with b/w photographs and line drawings. "Embellished with Superb Phototype Engravings"--title page. Northrop was a widely published author, known for his children's books on world history and travel. Tissued frontis color plate. Presentation page with elaborate color illustration, with dedication, from "her grandmother," dated 1898. Intricately tooled leather boards depicting a young lady on stage, presumably orating, with titling in gilt at top. Gilt is clean and bright. Light rubbing/wear to edges & corners, light scuffing on rear. Backstrip is missing, a section with part of the title is included. Soiling and light staining to text block. Front and rear hinges loose. Interior is very well preserved, and other than previous owner's name & address on flyleaf, is clean, crisp, bright, unmarked. 516 pp. Approx. 7" x 8.5". Very Scarce.
