Recollections of an Irish Rebel is a key book for the study of the Irish Independence movement of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries covering most aspects of Fenianism. John Devoy's political life-span practically coincided with the existence of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was an active Fenian in his early twenties and led the section of the IRB which was recruited from Irish soldiers in the British army.
