About this Item: New Southgate: H A Rogers 2 Bounds Green Road, 1887. First Edition. A very good full leather binding. 8vo. 9.0" x 6.0"x 1.5". pp.8/pp.371 illustrated with 14 full page plates (including frontis). Later green full calf binding. Spine with 5 raised bands, gilt titles andpublication date. Deckled (rough-cut) leading page edges. Light staining to endpapers (from the leather edging). Half title present with colophon to verso: "Printed By John Dale And Sons, Great Titchfield Street, Oxford Street, W." Title-page in red & black, with some off-setting from portrait frontis. Clean text and illustrations throughout, just the odd small blemish or brown spot. A very good copy in a very good binding. ** The anecdotes of Porson were communicated to the editor by William Maltby. *** This book is a collection of snippets of conversation, blatant name-dropping, very witty recollections and some rather less so, spanning the latter part of the 18th c to the middle of the 19th. Rogers made his fortune in banking and became a powerful figure in the literary world of London. He traveled to Paris before the Revolution; knew Lafayette, was a friend of Wordsworth and was himself a poet. In 1830 he published (privately) "Italy a poem" and in 1834 "Poems." The former was illustrated by Stothard and the latter by Turner. A contemporary wag noted that "were it not for the plates the books would be dished" but that was rather unkind. Rogers had spared no expense in having them bound and the books themselves are splendid objects. Seller Inventory # 44699
