Written and illustrated by Edmund Dulac, a French-British illustrator remembered for his illustrations to works of classic literature, as well as designing banknotes and postage stamps during World War II, most notable of which were those that heralded the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Dated from the British Library. In the original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and light fraying to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. A 1" split in the cloth to the front joint with small splits to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with with odd small spot or handling mark. Age toning to the endpapers and minor spotting to the first and last few pages. A 6" closed tear to page 31/32. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper dated 1918. Good. book.

With twenty plates (including one of the author). All plates are present and in very good condition (a couple are creased). Light brown boards with black lettering to spine and front and design in black to front are very good with a little pushing/bumping to corners, a few marks, the odd small bump/rub to edges and a little pushing/rubbing/bumping to head/tail of spine. Pages are generally clean and the binding is tight. Pages are a bit tanned. Previous owner's gift inscription and date in pen to front end-paper. Odd small mark/minor foxing to page edges, tops and bottoms. Occasional small marks/scattered foxing to pages. No other faults. A nice copy. All books described honestly and accurately. Nineteen tipped in colour plates, plus a black and white photograph of Dulac, beneath which is printed his fund raising message. Stories include: Sindbad the Sailor, Cinderella, Blue Beard, The Real Princess etc. Many of the drawings had been used before in Dulac's gift book, but others are seen here for the first time. This book was conceived during the first world war to raise funds for the French Red Cross. Dulac's message reads, " If any reader of my picture book would like to make a direct contribution to the French Red Cross, I should be very proud to receive it and acknowledge it. France bled of treasure and supplies is giving all she can. Can you not spare something towards this work of mercy and healing among our most gallant Allies?".
