21 x 28 cm, 320 S., zahlr. farbige Abb., Ln. About this Item: The Basilisk Press, London, 1976. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition... London: The Basilisk Press, 1976. Oblong 8vo. First edition. [ii],32,[2]pp. Illustrated with eleven full-page photographs, and three vignettes. §This is an OUT-OF-SERIES (so marked by the publisher on colophon) copy of volume four (only) of the four volume set 'The Red Books of Humphry Repton' (the three absent volumes being the various facsimiles), which was issued in an edition of 515 copies printed by The John Roberts Press: this is the explanatory text volume. Although bearing no ownership name, this copy came from the library of the printer Bernard Roberts, is in a variant publisher's binding, and appears to be a stand-alone copy for the printer's archive, possibly unique. Original maroon quarter leather, gilt lettering, marbled boards. Two of the photographs have a tiny stain to the lower corner at inner margin (surrounding leaves not affected in any way), and were therefore perhaps rejected for use in the series as very slightly defective, and made use of in this special copy. In all other respects a fine, bright copy of volume four (ONLY) of the now almost unobtainable four volume set. Seller Inventory # 209370

About this Item: London, The Basilisk Press 1976., 1976. Excellent facsimile reprints of three of the manuscript Red Books prepared by the architect and landscape designer Humphry Repton (1752-1818) for submission to his clients, incorporating reproductions in exact colour facsimile of the design drawings, with attached flaps showing before-and-after views of each landscape, that he provided. An accompanying ?explanatory volume? by Edward Malins discusses Repton?s career and sets out the evidence for each of the three commissions recorded in these Red Books. Forty years on, the Basilisk Press edition, issued in an edition of 515 numbered copies (of which 500 were for sale), remains the most ambitious facsimile publication of its nature, and it has attained a status in its own right as a serious contribution to the literature of garden history. It is worth recording that at the time it represented an epic commercial misjudgement by the Basilisk Press?s founder and proprietor, the late Charlene Garry, who was not able to pay the printing bill for the volumes in question, with the result that the unsold stock passed out of Charlene?s hands, but that is now ancient history, and it is really good that the volumes were published at the time that they were, for it is not easy to see who would have the will to carry through a similar publication today. 3 vols oblong folio and one vol large folio. Each volume is bound in publisher?s quarter red morocco, marbled boards. The set is preserved in its original large folio custom-built cloth slipcase. Seller Inventory # 14470

About this Item: The Basilisk Press, 1976. Limited facsimile edition. No. 465 of 515 (of which 500 were for sale). Four volumes. Three volumes oblong 4to, one volume folio. Quarter red morocco over red marbled boards, lettered in gilt on the spine. Printed on mould made rag wove paper. Each volume housed in separate slipcases and all volumes housed together in an encompassing slipcase with compartments, silver basilisk printed on the front. A near fine set, slightest of fading to the spines and a little staining to the spines and front of the main slipcase. The three volumes of Repton's landscapes are illustrated throughout in colour, including views, maps and landscape designs, many with Repton's trademark overlays. Malins's Explanatory Volume illustrated with black and white photographs. Humphry Repton, often regarded as the successor to Capability Brown, was one of the great landscape designers of the 18th century, and he worked for some of the most important noble families of his time. He provided his clients with his designs in "Red Books" (so called for the red morocco bindings he produced them in) which included explanatory text and watercolours, many with hinged or sliding overlays to show before and after views of the same scene. The Red Books were not published, they were elegant notebooks containing handwritten proposals for each commission he took on. In 1976 The Basilisk Press produced a high quality facsimile edition of 3 of the books, paying particular attention to ensuring a consistent colour reproduction for each image and its overlay. The result is a beautiful example of the work of one of Britain's leading landscape designers. Seller Inventory # 33704

About this Item: The Basilisk Press London, 1976. Folio & 4to. 4 volumes, set. (3 quarto volumes and 1 folio). Limited edition facsimiles. #488 of 515 sets (of which 500 were for sale). Quarter red morocco with marbled boards, gilt, housed in individual slipcases within a brown box. The paper has been specially made to match the Whatman paper Repton used in the original books. Illustrated throughout in collotype, using up to 10 colours, reproducing Repton's text and water colour designs for the improvement of each estate. Edward Malins' text is accompanied by black and white photographs of the properties taken in Summer 1975 by Eric de Maré. Still in the publisher's packaging for delivery to the original owner who seems never to have opened the parcel (this bookseller now has in order to catalogue it). As new. The Red Books (so-called because of the morocco binding) were an inspired piece of promotion by England's most successful landscape architect after Capability Brown. Around 300 were produced, of which roughly half survive. Each volume was unique to the property and the use of overlays enabled 'before-and-after' views. The Basilisk Press facsimiles are of the highest quality and allow a better appreciation of the art of Humphry Repton which Edward Malins' supplementary volume puts in its historical context.
