Book Description: New York: Covici Friede Publishers. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition, 1937. 1/26 copies printed letterpress on handmade paper, lettered A-Z on the Colophon in red ink (this copy #VV), SIGNED by Steinbeck, bound in flexible tan cloth boards with grey crossing lines and reddish brown horse on front cover, red lettering to spine, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, in a brown paper covered slipcase printed at spine with the copy number handwritten thereon. A Near Fine copy of book, the only consideration being light toning and fading of spine lettering, in a Very Good example of the fragile slipcase, professionally restored along edges, slightly toned along spine panel. The unrecorded lettered issue, apparently unknown to Goldstone [A9a]. Though presently a copy appears on the market denoted QQ, on the limitation page, it seems reasonable to assume that the lettered issue was at least originally intended to be kept to 26 copies, though more may have been available, and additionally distributed with the annotated double-alphabetical designation. 81pp. Subtitled 1. The Gift. II. The Great Mountains. III. The Promise. The novella was adapted by Hollywood, with music by Aaron Copeland (1949). One of the scarcest items in the Steinbeck canon. Signed by Author(s). Book Description: 147 11th St., Pacific Grove, California, dec. 2, 1948, 1948. Fascinating postcard from Steinbeck to his good friend, the actor/director Burgess Meredith: "Dear Buzzy: Are you back yet? This little quick jaunt for a picture [THE RED PONY] has been going a long time . I haven't heard from you in a very long time. The Byrens trial is going to happen in January. I will go down to appear. I have never known whether you are in the same action or a separate one. "I am working on Zapata script now and I think it might even be good. I painted my little house inside and out and made repairs and now am ready to fix my garden. New York and the painful past is becoming very remote. The pace is slow here and I have slowed down to match it. Let me hear from you. I want to know what you plan to do next. Saw Paulette for a moment in Mexico. She had a bulls ear (not a cap) "Do write "John" The reference to the Byrens trial is explained by Jackson Benson (THE TRUE ADVENTURES OF JOHN STEINBECK, NY, 1984, p. 610: "He had made arranges with Lewis Milestone . and Burgess Meredith to do a film of CANNERY ROW, and now one Bernie Byrens was filing a million dollar breach-of-contract suit, alleging that he had acquired the film rights to the novel in 1945." 5-1/2 x 3-1/4 inches. 1p. Very good. From the Estate of Burgess Meredith. Bookseller Inventory # 29896

Book Description: Covici Friede, New York, 1937. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Limited Edition. This is number 91 of 699 numbered and signed copies of the first edition of The Red Pony by John Steinbeck, published by Covici Friede in New York in 1937. The copy we are offering for sale today is in very good condition in its original slipcase. The Red Pony is an episodic novella. The first three chapters were published in magazines from 1933–1936, and the full book was published in 1937. The stories in the book are tales of a boy named Jody Tiflin -- three different and very moving stories about Jody and his life on his father's California ranch, all crafted beautifully as only Steinbeck can. The original cream cloth boards have a brick colored pony rearing up and the year MCMXXXVII written near the bottom of the front cover. These are still bright and clear. The boards have no shelf wear at all. On the front and rear covers near the hinge there is a small stain. Otherwise the boards are in very good condition. The slip case obviously assisted in keeping the boards in such good condition over the years. The case itself has some soiling and has shelf wear at the extremities. The title of the book and it’s number are still visible on the case’s spine but have faded a bit. The pages within are in fine condition. The heavy stock uncut pages have no tears, creases, folds or other problems. An original owner’s book plate appears on the pastedown page, but there are no other markings anywhere else within the book. The limitation page with Steinbeck’s signature is at the end of the book and is also in fine condition with Steinbeck’s signature still bright, crisp and clear. Signed by Author(s).
