Half title; lacking leading f.e.p. Orig. red cloth lettered in black, spine lettered in gilt; extremities sl. rubbed, spine a little darkened. A nice copy. Not in Glover & Greene. Hubin p.157. This is the first novel featuring Freeman's most famous character, the lawyer Dr. John Evelyn Thorndyke, who appeared in 21 novels and 40 short stories, and was one of the first forensic scientists in literature. Freeman was known for rigourously testing his theories and even conducting experiments to ensure that his plots were plausible and accurate. He was inspired to write The Red Thumb Mark after encountering Thumb o-Graphs, launched in 1904 by stationers Dow and Lester and available in railway bookstalls, it was a booklet in which people could collect the thumb prints of their friends and family. Freeman believed it could be used to make false fingerprints and thus was dangerous in the hands of criminals. A priceless diamond is stolen, and the prime suspect is a wealthy client of Dr. Thorndyke's law firm - not believing the man is guilty, Thorndyke toils to uncover the real culprit. Dr. Richard Austin Freeman, 1862-1943, was a medical doctor and author who worked as a colonial surgeon in West Africa and later at Middlesex Hospital and Holloway Prison in London. He had contracted blackwater fever, a complication of malaria, while in the Ivory Coast, and his health steadily declined in the years following his return to England. By the the turn of the century, he was no longer able to work as a physician, and turned to writing in order to support himself - first in collaboration with John James Pitcairn, a fellow medical officer at Holloway - and later by himself.
