About this Item: for Archibald Constable and Co, Edinburgh, 1824. First Edition. Small Octavo. In three volumes. 319, 328 and 331pp., Half-titles present. The story revolves around the return of Prince Charles Edward Stuart to England some years after 1745 in a final attempt to claim the crown. Some say this story relates to Scott's own life than any other Waverley Novel. In particular, it draws on Scott's training as a lawyer. Bound by Carss of Glasgow in ¾ brown polished calf over marbled paper covered boards, black morocco spine labels gilt, spines decorated in gilt and blind. Contemporary owner's bookplate Alexander Millar, Esq. who lived in Scotland and was a book collector who's name appears several times as a book subscriber. Seller Inventory # 021790

About this Item: Edinburgh and London Archibald Constable and Co. and Hurst, Robinson, and Co. 1824, 1824. 3 volumes. First edition, rare in original boards. 8vo, original printer's gray pressed paper boards backed in brown paper with labels gilt printed, page edges untrimmed. 319; 328; 331, [4 ads] pp. Rare in such state, in the publisher's original boards with no hint of sophistication or repair whatsoever. The text untrimmed and quite fresh through with some of the typical light spotting or mellowing throughout, the boards quite clean and attractive, some hinges are weak but still holding, later bookplates on front pastedowns, labels to the spine were printed at some time well after publication. RARE IN PRINTER'S BOARDS, THIS COPY IS IN FULL CONTEMPORARY STATE. It is also one of the author's less commonly seen, though perhaps less well remembered, major works. REDGAUNTLET is one of Scott's Waverley historical novels, and is set in Dumfries, Scotland in 1765. It is in many ways the most autobiographical of his novels as its two young heroes, Alan Fairford and Darsie Latimer, reflect the duality of Scott's own character. The novel describes the beginnings of a fictional third Jacobite Rebellion. While the plot is of course fictional, it was (according to an introduction by Scott written in the 1830s) inspired by a genuine visit by Bonnie Prince Charlie to London in 1750. One of the highlights of the novel is "Wandering Willie's Tale", which appears frequently as a stand-along short story in Scottish literary anthologies. Wandering Willie is a wandering musician and the narrator of the tale. It is a ghost story with the climax being an encounter between Willie's grandfather, Steenie Steenson and the ghost of his landlord Robert Redgauntlet. Seller Inventory # 29182
