Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Green boards with gilt lettering and geometric design stamped on cover and spine. Spine is faded, starting to crack on hinges, and fraying at the head and tail. Boards are rubbed on edges, especially corners where boards are starting to show. Front gutter is cracked and binding is beginning to loosen, but still remains fairly tight. Interior is clean though slightly toned. Bookplate and previous owner's name on front paste down. This novel follows three generations of a family in Valencia, Spain as they struggle to survive in the poverty stricken coastal city. Like his other early novels, this book is characterized by its intense realism and devotion to depicting everyday life and societal issues in Valencia. Vicente Blasco Ibáñez was a Spanish journalist, politician, and best-selling novelist known for his passionately anti-monarchical position. Ibáñez faced consistent political persecution in Spain before moving to France following World War I. He achieved international renown through U.S. film adaptations of some of his novels.
