Transcription of a 12th Century document in the Cotton Library, the Honour of Richmond. Contemporary worn calf leather binding with cracked joints, covers held only by cords, loss at spine-ends. Consists of: free end-paper; red and black title-page with vignette (loss on lower corner, text not affected), names of Subscribers; Praefatio with decorated header, capital and footer, xxxv pages (pencil note on page v; Fold-out pedigree (marked near right edge and darkened in fold); Four plates showing fourteen seals; Fold-out map "Richmondia Comitatus et Alvertunae Schira" and elevation of Richmond Castle; Plate showing two kings/princes and seven knights; Main text, 106 pages in red and black with header vignette and decrated footer (occasional light pencil note in margin); Genealogia Comitun Richemundiae Post Conquestum Angliae in red and black with header and footer; Index Cognominium (7 pages); Index Locorum (6 pages); Appendix. About this Item: R. Gosling, Londinii [London], 1722. Leather Bound. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Folio. 16.25 x 10.25 inches (41.5 x 26 cms). Full 18th century calf, 6 raised bands, black titling piece lettered and ruled gilt. Combed marbled endpapers. Blank, rubricated title in red and black letter press with vignette engraving, xxxvpp, list of subscribers [2pp], double page genealogical table, 4 engraved plates of seals, large folding map of Richmond backed on linen, engraved plate of William the Bastard Duke of Normandy, 2pp, 106pp in black and red letterpress, index[16pp], errata slip laid down, appendix [8pp], appendix 286pp (with 5 double page engraved heraldic and genealogical tables between pp.56 and 57, 3 engraved plates of monuments and heraldic shields after pp.242 and 254, double page engraved prospect of Richmond after p.252), index[30pp], final blank. With several wood engravings in text, engraved head and tail pieces and woodcut initials. Collated and complete. With contemporary manuscript additions and marginalia in an attractive 18th century clerical hand and one additional plate laid in. The original boards are scuffed and worn and at some point in its history the book has been rebacked preserving the original spine with a renewed titling piece and with cloth repairs to the inner hinges. The front hinge is starting but the binding is else in good, sound condition and the text block is tight and firm. Title and a few other leaves creased, a few leaves a little stained at corner, one leaf torn at edge, a few handling marks and a few leaves slightly yellowed from the varying quality of the paper stock on which it is printed. The text and plates are else in very good, clean condition. This is a large, heavy book and additional postage may be required, particularly if sending overseas. Seller Inventory # 000132

Engraved rubricated title page, xxxv, Subscribers List, double page genealogical table, 4 engraved plates of seals, double page folding map of Richmondshire, engraved plate of William the Bastard Duke of Normandy, 106pp in black and red plus Index and errata. Appendices 8pp, 286pp, plus 30pp of Indices. The Appendix containing five further double page genealogical plates, and four further plates including a double page panorama of Richmond. The whole with ten further text illustrations/vignettes. Some browning to pages in places. Bound in full calf, with some restoration to binding, spine decorated with elaborate contemporary gilt decoration, gilt dentelles. Boards somewhat scraped and rubbed, but still an attractive copy of this substantial historical work. Former owner's bookplate to pastedown. Minor worming to lower edge of prelims and title page.
