Barozzio da Vignola Il Vignola: The most printed treatise on architecture (still today) "Rule of the Five Orders of Architecture", one of the most influential and widespread architectural treatises of all time. Complete with 36 etchings, plus the title on the title page in an architectural frame, signed by Pio Panfilj, a well-known painter, engraver and decorator, Bolognese by adoption. Beautiful and rare eighteenth-century edition. Complete copy of all plates of this important work which was reprinted several times during the 18th century. See Canterzani, p. 75, n° 12 "Rare edition on good paper, and with etching carvings executed with diligence by Quadri". In fact, the publisher commissioned this work for the first time from Lodovico Quadri who in 1736 transformed it into a more streamlined format than the previous editions. The etchings are by Pio Panfilj, a well-known painter, engraver and decorator from the Marches, Bolognese by adoption, an important collaborator of the typography. The 36 full-page engravings are described on the recto of the following plate in italics. Entirely engraved title page, signed in the plate on the lower outer side. Vigòla, Iacopo Barozzi (or Barozio) known as the Architect (Vignola 1507 - Rome 1573). He was perhaps the best known and most representative architect of the late Renaissance. A central figure in the Mannerist phase of architecture, V. was characterized by his innovative way of composing and modulating masses through the application of architectural orders. He was active above all in Rome, where the villa of Pope Julius III (or Etruscan Museum) is certainly his main palace, and in Lazio. His activity as a treatise writer was also important, which had a very wide diffusion in the following periods. More important is the meaning of the Rule of the five orders of architecture (1562), in which V., stripping the rules of what could be abstruse, manages to establish a few relationships, clear and easily applicable, admitting that, respecting the perspective , decorations can be increased or decreased, rules that had to be fully applied in Baroque architecture. He was one of the best-known exponents of Mannerism, in an era of important changes of which he was the protagonist and architect. His primacy in architectural culture is due both to the creation of buildings of great elegance and to his work as a treatise writer, above all for having defined the concept of architectural order with extreme clarity in his famous "Rule of the five orders of architecture", one of the most influential and widespread architectural treatises of all time. He is considered by many to be the most important architect active in Rome in the Mannerist era. The first edition was printed in 1562. It is believed that the origin of this treatise is to be found in the studies and drawings, now lost, which he carried out in Rome for the Vitruvian Academy of Virtue. Coeval half parchment binding plates reinforced with coeval publisher's cardboard Pp. (2) + 76 + (2). 37 Plates (including the architectural frontispiece) engraved on copper and signed (on the front) "Pio Panfilj 1769". Text in italics on the side of the plates some ancient manuscript halos with the last white print on strong paper. At the end of the volume the inscription "FINE Delli V. Ordini d'Architett. By M. The book discusses the five classical orders: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and composite. By 1700, it had been reprinted fifteen times in Italian, and translated into Dutch, English, French, German, Russian and Spanish. By the end of the twentieth century, more than 250 editions of the book had been published, making it the most widely used architectural textbook of all up to the nineteenth century. This edition is a mulilingual reprint (Italian, Dutch, French and German) published in 1620. It includes an additional section by Michelangelo. l Multilingual book on architecture: Italian, Dutch, French and German.

ITA.

Folio (403 x 255mm). 37 leaves, numbered II-XXXII [XXXIII-XXXVII unnumbered], engraved throughout. Eighteenth-century speckled calf, with double gilt fillet, spine gilt in compartments, edges gilt (sympathetically rebacked with original spine laid down). N.p., n.d., but [Rome?, An early edition of influential mannerist architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola's (1507-1573) handsome and distinctive study of the mathematical bases for each of the five orders of architecture, entirely engraved, including title page and text. Extremely popular, the work was issued in numerous editions, and establishing issue points for precedence of the early printings in particular is not straightforward. The first issue of plates I-XXXII was in 1562 or 1563; in this copy, the qualities of the first XXXII numbered plates, the presence of the five subsequent, additional plates of four doorways and one mantelpiece, and the absence of the later plate of the five orders, align it with those of Fowler type A, no.351a. Fowler writes: 'the work described here may therefore be the third issue with the addition of five engraved plates of doorways and one mantelpiece'; in the five lines added at the bottom of plate III Vignola himself explains additions and edits that he has made to the plates, suggesting that this is an early, but not the first, incarnation of the work. 'Vignola, another of the great protagonists of the Italian Renaissance, was as influential in France, as Palladio was in England' (Fowler, 351). As the address and inscriptions on three of the final five plates indicate, Vignola enjoyed the patronage of the Farnese family, in particular Cardinals Alessandro and Ranuccio, and was responsible for the extravagant Villa Farnese near Viterbo, and for modifications to Palazzo Farnese in Rome, for Cardinal Ranuccio. Along with many other commissions, including the Chiesa del Gesù in Rome, Vignola completed two of the smaller domes of St Peter's basilica, working from Michelangelo's plans after the artist's death. With his Regola delle cinque ordini Vignola's 'goal is to develop a set of rules form proportions that can be understood by ?average minds? His predecessors' theories of proportion were flawed, he suggested, by the fact that they were extremely difficult to put into practice.he called for a universal method of calculation that can be applied to individual working measurements' (Evers & Biermann, p.88). Vignola's focus, therefore, was less on establishing a theory of architecture and more on creating a practical set of instructions for building. Provenance: 1. Armorial bookplate of Arthur William FitzRoy Somerset (1855-1937) on front paste-down, English first-class cricketer. 2. Blindstamped exlibris, pencilled name and date of Derek Gibson (1936-2021), from his collection. Outer blank margins of final plates strengthened/extended, stain to outer portion of final eight leaves, strongest on versos. B. Evers & V. Rare multilingual edition of Vignola's Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura, a classic account of the five orders of architecture, with the continuation (La ii parte) and Crispijn de Passe's related Oficina arcularia. Vignola (1507-1573), Italian painter, architect and theorist, "emerged in the 1550s as the leading architect in Rome after Michelangelo and was in papal service for over three decades. . His Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura (1562), a concise illustrated tract on the five orders, enjoyed immense popular and academic success throughout Europe and was the most influential book on classical architecture until the advent of Modernism" (Turtle). The continuation, La ii parte dell architetura dell Vignola, shows partial elevations, sections and plans of Italian churches, views of altars, fountains, elevations of Dutch houses (some by Pieter Vinckebooms) and elevations of fireplaces and chimney-pieces, partly engraved by Crispijn I and II van de Passe. In some copies these plates are divided into 5 separately numbered series; here the plates were renumbered and rearranged so as to form one series of 42 plates. La ii parte is followed by De Passe's Oficina arcularia, showing designs for altars, tombs and monuments, partly already published separately in 1621. BAL believes the first series of these plates, numbered 1-28, to be part of the La ii parte dell architetura. The three works are often found bound together and it seems that they were published together, but they were also sold separately. The make up differs from copy to copy and the publication history is complicated. Some soiling and browning, gutter margin of title-page slightly damaged, a few leaves with marginal water stains, otherwise in very good condition. Binding soiled, spine and corners damaged, otherwise good and structurally sound.l Ad 1: WorldCat (5 copies); not in BAL; Fowler; Millard; STCN; ad 2 & ad 3: BAL 3452; Fowler 362; Franken, Van de Passe 1357; ad 3: Hollstein XVI, p. 138, no. 174/II; STCN (5 copies, with only 42 plates); for Vignola: Turtle, "Vignola, Jacopo", in: Grove art online.
