About this Item: Rupa, 2017. Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Along with quantum mechanics in the 1920s, Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity (1905) and General Theory of Relativity (1916) stand as the supreme achievements of twentieth-century physics. In simplest terms, the theory of Relativity is an approach to the measurement and study of space and time. The theory assumes that findings are based upon the relation of the frame of reference to the objects measured. The Special Theory of Relativity is primarily concerned with electric and magnetic phenomena. The General Theory focuses on gravity—not as a force as Newton postulated—but as a curved field in the space-time continuum, created by the presence of mass. Redesigned to present an easier reading, Relativity includes both explanatory illustrations and mathematical derivations of Einstein’s theories. This book brings out the great scientist’s remarkable ability to penetrate directly into the heart of the subject and yet remain lucid and accessible. (jacket). Seller Inventory # 120925

The structure of space according to the general theory of relativity. Appendixes. Bibliography. Index. World-renowned theoretical physicist Albert Einstein was highly interested in enlightening the theory of Relativity to people who were not particularly well-versed in higher mathematic concepts and theoretical physics. His answer to this was to write the ground-breaking work, "Relativity: The Special and General Theory." In the paper, Einstein lays out two contradictory principles: a principle of relativity and a principle of light. Einstein proposed that, rather than discarding these two principles for being conflicting, the rules of time and space should be completely revamped and rethought in order to find a way to make these two principles work in synchronization. Rather than just explaining his new proposal, though, Einstein writes exactly why these rules need to be altered by explaining the inaccuracies and inadequacies located within each of the current theories. Albert Einstein is best known for his work on the theory of Relativity, gaining him the title of "Father of Modern Physics." He also received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics, and his work is attributed as an inspiration for the quantum theory within the field of physics. Seller Inventory # 126829

About this Item: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG, Germany, 2000. Hardback. Condition: New. 2nd ed. 1977. Language: English. Brand new Book. In retrospect, the first edition of this book now seems like a mere sketch for a book. The present version is, if not the final product, at least a closer approximation to it. The table of contents may show little change. But that is simply because the original organization of the material has been found satisfactory. Also the basic purpose of the book remains the same, and that is to make relativity come alive conceptually. I have always felt much sym- pathy with Richard Courant's maxim (as reported and exemplified by Pascual Jordan) that, ideally, proofs should be reached by comprehension rather than computation. Where computations are necessary, I have tried to make them as transparent as possible, so as not to hinder the progress of comprehension. Among the more obvious changes, this edition contains a new section on Kruskal space, another on the plane gravitational wave, and a third on linearized general relativity; it also contains many new exercises, and two appendices: one listing the curvature components for the diagonal metric (in a little more generality than the old" Dingle formulas "), and one syn- thesizing Maxwell's theory in tensor form. But the most significant changes and additions have occurred throughout the text. Many sections have been completely rewritten, many arguments tightened, many "asides" added, and, of course, recent developments taken into account. Seller Inventory # APC9783540079705

About this Item: Warsaw: Gitlina, 1923. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Contemporary half-cloth and marbled boards (rubbed, remains of paper label on covers). 8vo, pp. [iv], 109, [1, blank], [4]. FIRST EDITION, EXTREMELY RARE. According to Ernst Weil, this is the first Yiddish printing of any work by Einstein (I am unable to read Yiddish). Einstein’s popular exposition of relativity aimed to give “an exact insight into the theory of relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics” (from the preface to the English translation). It was first published in German in 1917 (“Über die spezielle und die allgemeine Relativitätstheorie”), went through numerous editions up to the present century, and was translated into English in 1920, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian in 1921, Hungarian in 1922 and Hebrew in 1928. It is divided into 3 parts, the first dealing with special relativity, the second with general relativity and the third with considerations on the universe as a whole. The work has been labeled unique in that it gives readers an insight into the thought processes of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. Albert Einstein visited Palestine in 1923 for 12 days, giving the first lecture at the Mount Scopus campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem—two years before the University opened in 1925. About this Item: London: Methuen, 1923. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Translators’ preface, detailed contents, seven diagrams, tables, equations, notes; viii, 216 pages, followed by publisher’s catalogue dated June, 1923. The original red cloth is in very good shape, with blind lettering on upper board and gilt lettering clear on the spine. There is a mere hint of rubbing to the corner tips and a bump to the tail of spine at lower edge. Both free endpapers are toned but the interior is bright, crisp, and clean. [Please see images of the actual book.] This is a presentation copy, possibly given to Eric Gutkind, who bequeathed his small collection to my father, a close friend. Inserted in the book is a card from the 1928 International Mathematical Congress in Bologna commemorating the recent death of Luigi Bianchi whose rediscoveries of identities for the Riemann tensor were important for an understanding of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. “[I]t is easy to forget the way in which the theory gradually grew under the stimulus of physical experiment, and thus to miss much of its meaning. It is this growth which the present collection of papers is designed chiefly to exhibit .” As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is a small, attractive, acid-free bookplate, pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly-----domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority.
