About this Item: Forgotten Books, United States, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Excerpt from Reliquiæ Diluvianæ Or Observations on the Organic Remains Contained in Caves, Fissures, and Diluvial Gravel, and on Other Geological Phenomena, Attesting the Action of an Universal Deluge In its interior it divides into several smaller passages, the extent of which has not been ascertained. In its course it is intersected by some vertical fissures, one of which is curvilinear, and again returns to the cave; another has never been traced to its termination; whilst the outer extremity of a third is probably seen in a crevice or fissure that appears on the face of the quarry, and which closes upwards before it leaves the body of the limestone. By removing the sedi ment and stalactite that now obstruct the smaller passages, a farther advance in them may be rendered practicable. There are but two or three places in which it is possible to stand upright, and these are where the cavern is intersected by the fissures; the latter of which continue open upwards to the height only of a few feet, when they gradually close, and terminate in the body of the limestone; they are thickly lined with stalactite, and are attended by no fault or slip of either of their sides. Both the roof and ?oor, for many yards from the entrance, are composed of regular horizontal strata of limestone, uninterrupted by the slightest appearance of fissure, fracture, or stony rubbish of any kind; but farther in, the roof and sides become irre gularly arched, presenting a very rugged and grotesque appearance, and being studded with pendent and roundish masses of chert and stalactite; the bottom of the cavern is visible only near the en trance and its irregularities, though apparently not great, have been filled up throughout to a nearly level surface, by the introduction of a bed of mud or loamy sediment, the history of which, and also of the stalac tite, I shall presently describe. About this Item: Cambridge Library Collection, United Kingdom, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Reissue. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.William Buckland (1784-1856), Dean of Westminster, was an English geologist best known for his contributions to palaeontology. He became the first Reader in Geology at the University of Oxford in 1818. Buckland spent 1819-1822 investigating fossil remains in caves, in order to refine his concept of catastrophism. His research led him to the realisation that hyena remains in Kirkland Cave, Yorkshire, were the remains of an ancient ecosystem and were not relics of the Flood; this led to his being awarded the Copley Medal by the Royal Society of London in 1822. This volume, first published in 1823, contains a full account of Buckland s influential research in Kirkland Cave, which demonstrated for the first time the ability of scientific analysis to reconstruct events from deep time. Buckland s support for and influential revision of the concept of catastrophism is also illustrated in this volume. Seller Inventory # AAV9781108021142

About this Item: Cambridge University Press. Paperback. Condition: New. 352 pages. Dimensions: 11.6in. x 8.2in. x 0.9in.William Buckland (1784-1856), Dean of Westminster, was an English geologist best known for his contributions to palaeontology. This volume, first published in 1823, contains a full account of Bucklands influential research in Kirkland Cave, which demonstrated for the first time the ability of scientific analysis to reconstruct events from deep time. Bucklands support for and influential revision of the concept of catastrophism is also illustrated in this volume. This item ships from multiple locations. Reliquiae Diluvianae; or, Observations on the Organic: Buckland, William.

About this Item: John Murray, 1823. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London, quarto, vii, [1], 303 p., text illustrations, 27 plates and maps (3 hand-colored), and folding table. ***CONTENT: The Rev. William Buckland (1784-1856), twice President of the Geological Society, was one of the leading figures in British geology during the first half of the 19th century. Early in his career Buckland was convinced that the fossil record and recent sedimentary deposits could provide supportive evidence for the Biblical Flood. This first edition of "Reliquiae", his most acclaimed and influential treatise, outlines his arguments for a global deluge in Noah's time. The volume documents Buckland's keen observations and discoveries of the bones of antediluvian mammals (hyaenas, tigers, elephants, rhinos, etc.) in caves and river-gravels in England, France, Germany and elsewhere. Later chapters discuss geologic evidence of catastrophic flooding, excavation of valleys, deposits of gravel beds and boulders worldwide, and more. The volume is illustrated by striking engraved plates of fossil remains, cutaway views of caves showing accumulations of sediments and bones, and hand-colored geological maps and scenic views. ***CONDITION: This is a fully complete VG copy in contemporary 3/4 tan calf and marbled boards, with an ornate, gilt-decorated backstrip with 4 raised bands and a brown morocco title label. The covers are very sound, with only light edge wear; spine tip worn, but the gilt lettering and decoration is well preserved. Joints and hinges tender but holding, binding very firm. Marbled endpapers and page edges to match the covers. The text pages and plates are near pristine: fresh, clean and bright, save for mild foxing to the title page and occasional offsetting from the plates. Library stamp on upper and lower text block, and pocket on rear pastedown, but no other ownership markings. A nice copy of a very scarce treatise. Ward and Carozzi 369. BMNH 276 (wanting). International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost. Seller Inventory # OG5267

Reliquiae Diluvianae; or, Observations on the Organic: BUCKLAND, William

About this Item: Twenty-seven engraved or lithographed plates & maps (3 are hand-colored, one is folding) & one folding printed table. Several illus. in the text. vii, [1], 303 pp. Large 4to, orig. boards (neatly rebacked retaining the orig. paper label), entirely uncut. London: J. Murray, 1823. First edition of an important work in which Buckland concluded "that species of animals that now exist together only in the tropics had coexisted in northern Europe with species still in existence, and that this demonstrated a tropical climate in antediluvial times, before the deluge buried the bones in a layer of mud."-D.S.B., II, 569. This work was seized upon with eagerness by all who were desirous of having the records of revelation supported by the interpretations of scientific investigations. Buckland (1784-1856), reader in geology at Oxford for many years, raised geology to rank alongside the more prominent sciences of the University and gave Oxford an international name in science. Nice copy and uncommon. With the signature of William Sturges Bourne (1769-1845), Canning's home secretary. Seller Inventory # 3604
