About this Item: T. Roycroft for R. Marriot etc., London, 1672. Hardcover. Condition: Good. The Third Edition, with large additions. Small 8vo. (17x10.5cm). Portrait frontispiece+ title page+ 82 unnumbered pages +584 pages. Collates a-e 8, f4, A-Z8, Aa-Pp8, qq7 (complete). In addition to the frontispiece there are two other full page engraved portraits. The unnumbered pages contain Izaac Walton¿s life of Sir Henry. Amongst other works the volume contains Wotton¿s ¿Elements of Architecture¿, one of the earliest English works on architecture. Some reasonably light browning and marking and slight creasing, but generally a good copy, readable throughout. The back of the endpaper marked and a name scraped from a blank inserted before the frontispiece. A very small chip in the top of the frontispiece and the title page. A faint water stain on a few pages. Bound at the back of the book is;- Wotton, Henry Letters to Lord Zouch London, for Benj. Tooke, 1685 (extracted from the 1685 edition of Reliquiae Wottonianae) title page + pages numbered 585 to 713. Collates Rr-Zz8, Aaa8, Bbb2. The pages a more browned than in the Reliquiae, but still readable, the browning an even colour over the page, apart from a few spots. Bound in full leather, worn, the covers in quite good condition, apart from some loss of leather on the corners and a scrape, about 4cm and 0.5 cm wide on the edge of the front cover. The spine with a leather label and elaborately decorated in gold, detached along the rear hinge and splitting on the front hinge, a piece about 1.5cm deep missing from the top of the spine. New endpapers. Frontispiece portrait missing. Title page darkened and stained. Small hole by page number on p. 7. Stains pp. 19-22, 24. Small tear in last page. A collection of the works of Henry Wotton, English diplomat and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1614 and 1625. He is probably best known for remarking: "An ambassador is an honest gentleman sent to lie abroad for the good of his country." The Elements of Architecture, found in this volume, is a free translation of "de Architectura" by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio. A small poetry section at rear includes Wotton's best-known poem, "The Character of a Happy Life." The biography at front was written by Sir Henry's friend, Izaak Walton.
