Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Contemporary Art, Maps (illustrator). 1st. The author's parents were pioneer settlers in New Plymouth, arriving there is the early 1840s. He was born there in 1857. His recollections include the infant township of "a dozen or so shops", dwellings scattered over a large area, unmetalled roads and occasional footpaths with "irregular shipping: no communication with the outsidfe world other than by sea." Part of his childhood and schooling was marked by "hostilities between the two races," By 1872 the author had begun his surveying cadetship and this profession led to him exploring much of the rugged and bush clad area of Taranaki centered on Mount Egmont. The parties he worked mainly cut tracks through the bush, marking out roads and laying out blocks of land which later became "the prosperous farmlands now to be seen on every hand." Through much of this time hostility between Maori and the whitte settlers continued, but contact with them enabled the author to "gain the friendship of many leading members of the tribes so that I learnt much of Maori tradition." Part one of the bookcovers his early memories, part two survey work in the field, from the early 1870s to 1888., with part three dealing with administrative duties with the Tranaki Provincial Survey Office and public affairs with part four devoted to the traditions and folklore of Taranaki Maori. A book full of interesting pioneering recollections, those of surveying in the field being particularly valuable. First edition published by Thomas Avery in 1946, 122 pages, illustrated with frontis photo of author, 12 b/w plates, (art amd photos) two maps, one a foldout. (A copy of the latter is loosely enclosed at back.) Red hard covers with black spine titles are VG +, former owner name inked top FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Original dust jacket with scenic sketch by Fred Coleman lower front is also VG+ with few short tears and chips.and foxing spots. A grand copy of a scarce book.
