About this Item: ReInk Books, 2018. Softcover. Condition: NEW. Reprinted from 1887 edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. This paperback book is SEWN, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of paperback binding. It can also be open wide. The pages will not fall out and will be around for a lot longer than normal paperbacks. This print on demand book is printed on high quality acid-free paper. About this Item: Government Printing Office, Washington, DC: 1877., 1877. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 164 p. Sm. 4to. Original full red buckram. Front board embossed with the seal of the United States Department of State. Head of spine worn with slight loss. Hardbound. "During the American Civil War, Confederate commerce raiders (the most famous being the CSS Alabama) were built in Britain and did significant damage to Union merchant marine and naval forces. The United States claimed direct and collateral damage against Britain, the so-called Alabama Claims, and was awarded $15,500,000 by an international tribunal in 1871 as part of the Treaty of Washington. United States Senator Charles Sumner originally requested $2 billion, or alternatively the seceding of Canada to the United States. The tribunal was composed of representatives from the United Kingdom (Sir Alexander Cockburn), the United States (Charles Francis Adams), Italy (Count Sclopsis), Switzerland (Jakob Stampfli), and Brazil (Baron d'Itajuba). This established the principle of international arbitration, and launched a movement to codify international law with hopes for finding peaceful solutions to international disputes. The Alabama Claims was thus a precursor to the Hague Convention, the League of Nations, the World Court, and the United Nations." - Wikipedia. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SHELF W21. Original publisher's brown cloth, decorated in blind to both covers, the smooth spine in five blind-ruled compartments, gilt-lettered in one and the rest stamped in blind (rebacked, preserving most of the original spine). Provenance: Contemporary manuscript ownership inscription of William L. C. Pennington, a private in the Union Army during the Civil War, to rear pastedown; bookplate of Willard S. Morse (1856-1935) to front pastedown. First edition. Senate issue, with the astronomical and meteorological observations omitted from the House issue and subsequent editions. Fremont's report, written with the help of his wife Jessie Benton, and map "changed the entire picture of the West [and] represented as important a step forward from the earlier western maps of the period as did those of Pike, Long, and Lewis and Clark in their day. [Fremont's map] represented trustworthy direct observation, a new, welcome, and long overdue development in the myth-encrusted cartography of the West. To Fremont and his magnificent map of his Second Expedition all praise. An altogether memorable document in the cartographic history of the West, and for it alone Fremont would deserve to be remembered in history. This map marked not only the end but the beginning of an era" (Wheat). In 1842 Fremont was commissioned to head "a 25-man, four-month expedition to survey and map the region of the emerging Oregon Trail through South Pass on the Continental Divide. A Report of an Exploration . . . between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains . . . (1843), the lively, factually detailed government report that Frémont and his wife produced after the journey caught the public imagination: images of Frémont's guide, the then little-known Christopher 'Kit' Carson, riding bareback across the prairie, and Frémont himself, raising a flag on a Rocky Mountain peak, entered the national mythology. "In 1843 Frémont set out on a far more ambitious journey to the Oregon region. Disregarding government orders to return by the same route, he went south to Nevada and, in a dangerous midwinter journey, over the snow-covered Sierra Nevada into Mexican-held California. By the time the expedition returned east across the southern rim of what Frémont defined as the Great Basin, they had completed a bold fourteen-month circuit of the West, traveling 6,475 miles by their own calculations. The Frémonts' account of the journey, A Report of the Exploring Expedition to Oregon and California . . . (1845), enthralled the nation. Skillfully combining adventure, scientific data, and detailed practical information for emigrants, supplemented by a valuable map prepared by expedition cartographer Charles Preuss, it was "monumental in its breadth - a classic of exploring literature" (William H. Goetzmann, Exploration and Empire [1966], p. 248). Powerful propaganda, it stirred Americans to head west, guided, as pioneer Sarah Royce stated, "only by the light of Frémont's Travels" (Pamela Herr for ANB online). Senate issue, including the astronomical and meteorological reports omitted from the House issue (and later reprints). Fremont's expeditions of 1842-44 resulted in the first reliably mapped route to the west coast. As expedition leader, Fremont achieved all he set out to do and more. After attaining his objective in Oregon in the fall of 1843 he turned his party south to the Great Basin and then -following the Truckee River- crossed the Sierra Nevada in January and February of 1844, reaching Sutter's Fort on March 6 without losing a man, though only half the party's animals reached their destination and a brass cannon was abandoned on the way. One of the folding maps in the text charts the course of the Rio de los Americanos (American RIver) from Mountain Lake (Lake Tahoe) to the Sacramento at New Helvetia. The large map accompanying his report was drawn by Charles Preuss, Fremont's topographical assistant (though he is not credited in the legend) and it is considered a monument of field topography and mapmaking. Zamorano 80 #39, Cowan page 223, Wagner-Camp IV:115:1, Graf 1436, Howes F370). Seller Inventory # 20328
