About this Item: Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources, Ottawa, ON, 1963. Paperback. Condition: Fine. Showing step by step construction methods of a traditional Inuit boat. Printed card wraps, 8vo (9-3/4 inches [24.7 cm] tall), pp. vi, 83, illustrated with line drawings and 32 B&W plates, appendix, chart, bibliography. A fine unused copy, documenting the building of an Umiak - a large skin covered boat traditionally used by women or as a family boat in the Summer, built here using traditional methods on the NW tip of Quebec. It is interesting to note that the Inuit participants are referred to within the text by their now defunct government assigned ujamiit or disc numbers which ".were used by the Government of Canada in lieu of surnames for the Inuit and were similar to dog-tags. [used] from 1941 until 1978" wiki. Seller Inventory # 2611
