About this Item: Cologne (Coloniae Agrippinae), Sumptibus Bernardi Gualtheri, 1626., 1626. 8vo. (XXXII),790 (recte 778),(66 index) p. Calf 16 cm (Ref: VD17 23:718837B) (Details: Title in red and black. Bernard Walter's woodcut printer's mark on the title. The first 549 pages contain Polydorus. The rest consists of 1: 'C. Plinii caput 56 libri 7 Naturalis Historiae. Cum notis Hermolai Barbari & Ferdinandi Pintiani. 2: Alexandri Sardi Ferariensis derelictorum a Polydoro Vergilio libri duo. 3: Inventionum Sylva Cognati, cum indice copioso. 4: M. Ant. Sabellici Heroicum Poëma de rerum inventoribus. 5: Nova reperta novem veteribus ignota'. This title is very rare, we found in KVK only a few copies. Not one copy was auctioned worldwide according to 'Rare Book Hub, formerly the Americana Exchange') (Condition: Back gone. Boards shabby and damaged, corners bumped. Both flyleaves removed. Four tiny holes in the title. Paper browning) (Note: Polidoro Virgili of Urbino, Latinised as Polydorus Vergilius Urbinas, ca. 1470-1555, was an Italian humanist scholar, historian, priest and diplomat who spent most of his life in England. He is particularly remembered for three of his works, the 'Proverbiorum libellus' (1498), a collection of Latin proverbs; 'De inventoribus rerum' (1499), a history of discoveries and origins; and the 'Anglica Historia' (drafted by 1513; printed 1534), an influential history of England. 'Vergil's De Inventoribus Rerum was published in 1499, having been written in only three months. It was a history of origins and inventions, describing in three books the 'first begetters' of all human activities. Book I investigated the origin of the gods and the word 'God', along with such matters as the creation, marriage, religion and learning. Book II covered, among other topics, the origins of law, time, military science, money, precious metals and art. Book III covered, again among other topics, the origins of agriculture, architecture, towns, theatres, tools and materials, maritime navigation, commerce and prostitution. For the edition of 1521, Vergil added five more books, devoted to the 'initia institutorum rei Christianae', i.e. the origins of Christian rites and institutions. He probably thought that this addition would be a popular one, but it was also a concession towards critics who had labelled the 'De Inventoribus' a work of heretics and depravity. The work nonetheless included criticisms of monks, priestly celibacy, indulgences, and of the policies and constitutional status of the papacy. As a consequence it was placed on the 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum' (papal list of prohibited books) in 1564. An expurgated text, sanctioned by Gregory XIII, was published in 1576. 'De Inventoribus' was, however, exceedingly popular, and was quickly translated into French (1521), German (1537), English (1546) and Spanish (1551). Thirty Latin editions had been published by the time Vergil died in 1555; and the work eventually ran to around 70 Latin editions, and another 35 translations. (.) The work is notable for the immense industry that went into its compilation, and the range of ancient and modern writers on which Vergil was able to draw'. (Source Wikipedia's English lemma of 'Polydore Vergil') (Collation: *-2*8, A-3F8, 3G6) (Photographs on request) 500 gr. Seller Inventory # 120304

About this Item: Agathynian Club, 1868. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Polydorus Virgilius, De Rerum Inventoribus, translated by John Langley. 1868. New York, Agathynian Club. Limited to 120 copies, of which this is #14. Green publisher’s cloth, 4to, near fine condition. This is a reprint of Langley’s 1546 translation of a 1521499 work on the history of the origins of institutions, technology, etc. “Book I investigated the origin of the gods and the word "God", along with such matters as the creation, marriage, religion and learning. Book II covered, among other topics, the origins of law, time, military science, money, precious metals and art. Book III covered, again among other topics, the origins of agriculture, architecture, towns, theatres, tools and materials, maritime navigation, commerce and prostitution. For the edition of 1521, Vergil added five more books, devoted to the initia institorum rei Christianae, i.e. the origins of Christian rites and institutions. He probably thought that this addition would be a popular one, but it was also a concession towards critics who had labelled the De Inventoribus a work of heretics and depravity. The work nonetheless included criticisms of monks, priestly celibacy, indulgences, and of the policies and constitutional status of the papacy. As a consequence it was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (papal list of prohibited books) in 1564: an expurgated text, sanctioned by Gregory XIII, was published in 1576.” (Wikipedia). About this Item: Basileæ apud Mich. Isingrinium, 1540. 8vo, pp. [lvi], 615; set in italic throughout; printer's device on title; a good clean copy in contemporary English calf (see below) over pasteboard, corners worn, rebacked, and with later endpapers. Binding: Contemporary calf over pasteboard, the sides blindtooled with a distinctive roll featuring what look like two pairs of wheels. This book belonged to the late Graham Pollard, whose pencil note inside states: 'Roll not in Oldham EBSB [i.e. English Blind-stamped Bindings] but clearly English'. The origin of the binding is confirmed by the early provenance. Provenance: 16th century inscription on the title page of 'Ri: Jackson' with his motto 'Meritum men[s?] miseratio d[omi]ni', and his cost 18d. This is quite possibly the Richard Jackson who matriculated at Clare College, Cambridge, in 1567, and graduated in 1570, moving to Yorkshire to become master of Ingleton School in the West Riding. He is traditionally ascribed the authorship of a ballad on the battle of Flodden Field. There were, however, numerous other Richard Jacksons at Cambridge in the 16th century (though, curiously enough, hardly any at Oxford), and the owner could well be one of those. Adams V430; this edition not in BMC German. Seller Inventory # 17744
