About this Item: Baker and Scribner, New York. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1850. First edition, first printing. Engraved frontispiece and engraved vignette title page by F.O.C. Darley inserted. With one page of ads p. . This copy with 16 full-page color plates by Edmund W. Ashe inserted later (probably from the 1906 Bobbs-Merrill edition). Front flyleaf with an original ink drawing of a young woman, signed, by Ashe. Tipped onto a front flyleaf is a one-page ALS from F.O.C. Darley to artist and librarian Charles Lanman dated October 1850 and discussing Lanmanís request for Darley to produce a drawing of "The Vagabond Bachelor". This copy INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION to Gov. [Henry B.] Anthony, then governor of Rhode Island, and later a long-serving senator, known as "the father of the senate". Laid in is a 1957 TLS from Lew David Feldman (House of El Dieff, Inc.) to noted collector Fred Kirkland regarding this copy and noting that there was only one other copy know with a contemporary inscription. With the bookplates of both Anthony and Kirkland on the front pastedown. Octavo full maroon morocco; all edges stained red. Hinges flaked and front inner hinge cracked. A very good copy preserved in a full acid calf pull-off box, heavily gilt on the spine. A very nice and important copy of one of the iconic books of the 19th century. Inscribed By Author.
