About this Item: Buenos Aires, 1927. Wrappers. "Martín Fierro: a turning point in latin american avant garde literature". Small folio; 44 of 45 issues [some are double]; lacking issue # 21; original wrappers. Some restorations throughout. An original edition of this bi-weekly periodical that had a decisive influence on the Argentine literary milieu, the first number of which appeared in February 1924. Its first director was the poet and reporter Evar Méndez; this journal was a strong tribunal of the vanguard movements that developed in Europe; it particularly defended the principles of Ultraism of which Borges was a great supporter at the time; its pages documented all the changes and transformations that could be demonstrated in the artistic and literary processes of the period, principally in Europe, addressing the new architecture, the new literature, or the so-called revolutionary music. Ultraism and to a lesser degree Futurism and Creationism did not delay in imposing their tone and style. At the beginning of 1925 those adept at "free verse" joined Martín Fierro, almost all of them Ultraists, as if the rules of the new times had been imposed in a definitive fashion. The journal gained prestige with the publication of the poems and prose of such luminaries as J. L. Borges, Ricardo Güiraldes, Oliverio Girondo, Nicolás Olivari, and Raúl González Tuñón, to cite only the most notable contributors. A spirit of risk-taking, the apparent lack of reason, and Surrealism appear in each page. In its time, Martín Fierro was definitive in legitimizing works prohibited at the time, and it achieved in capturing with timeliness a new literary sensibility within our media. An almost complete collection of this impressive journal, such as the one we are offering, is extremely rare in the market; even single issues are much sought after and pricey. "The journal Martín Fierro [1924/1927] was one of the foremost publications of the Argentine avant-garde. It conferred a name on the literary group of la Florida, since its members would meet on that street of Buenos Aires. Its pages introduced an aesthetic appreciation of the great European and Latin American artistic movements, as well as their local resonances and echoes. During the four years it was active, Martín Fierro was the tribunal of sorts for young Argentine writers and intellectuals, as well as for critics and authors from other countries. Its Manifesto encapsulates the ideas that held sway in Argentine avant-garde circles, thus ushering in a new cultural awareness in the country. Martín Fierro represented an entirely new way of interpreting a national and Latin American cultural Project, linked to the concept of art for art's sake, in order to forge its own creative and intellectual path. In the words of one of its original directors: "After Martín Fierro there is a new way of writing and painting in the country." [Sergio Bahur, Prologue to an exhibition paintings, books and films related to the journal Martín Fierro at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires, 2010]. Martin Fierro - una revista fundamental para el estudio de las vanguardias en Sudamerica. Mmissing only # 21. Seller Inventory # X99X000971
