About this Item: Vintage Contemporaries, 2008. Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Reprint. Movie tie-in edition. 2008 Trade Paperback. We have more books available by this author. 463 pp. In the hopeful 1950s, Frank and April Wheeler appear to be a model couple: bright, beautiful, talented, with two young children and a starter home in the suburbs. Perhaps they married too young and started a family too early. Maybe Frank's job is dull. And April never saw herself as a housewife. Yet they have always lived on the assumption that greatness is only just around the corner. But now that certainty is about to crumble. With heartbreaking compassion and remorseless clarity, Richard Yates shows how Frank and April mortgage their spiritual birthright, betraying not only each other, but their best selves. About this Item: New York: Vintage Books, (2008.), 2008. Trade paperback. The author's very powerful first novel, nominated for the National Book Award, originally published in 1961. Yates is probably one of the most underappreciated writers of our time - although recent comments by Kurt Vonnegut (who called this book 'the Great Gatsby of our time') and others have begun to rectify this situation. Movie tie-in edition with a photograph of DiCaprio and Winslett on the front cover. 355 pp. Fine in glossy illustrated wrappers. Seller Inventory # 45001

About this Item: Little, Brown and Company, 1961. Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 2nd Printing. 2nd printing. Former library copy with usual marks. Previous owner attempted, clumsily, to remove the library mylar and lift the pasted-down jacket flaps from the endpapers - the result is two closed tears to the jacket panels (which we repaired on the reverse with Japanese tissue), and a ragged edge to the front jacket flap. The jacket is now protected under fresh mylar. Without the library marks, the book itself would be somewhere between very good and near fine. 1961 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author! 337 pp. 8vo. The first full-length novel by Richard Yates, examining the dark underbelly of an unhappy marriage in suburban America. Inspiration for the 2008 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Kathy Bates. Winslet won a Golden Globe for best actress, and the film was nominated for numerous other awards. Yates's novel was nominated for the National Book Award, but despite some critics comparing his work to that of James Joyce, he did not gain a wide readership until after his death. In 1989, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Yates, reflecting on his life's work, had this to say: "I'm one of those writers who has the misfortune to write his best book first." Revolutionary Road, in fact, was nominated for the National Book Award in 1962 and is hailed today as a modern classic. But in the opinions of many writers and critics, The Easter Parade is equally fine (the book has been championed by Joan Didion, David Sedaris, Kurt Vonnegut, Larry McMurtry, and Tao Lin, among others). Its famous opening line warns of the bleak narrative to follow: "Neither of the Grimes sisters would have a happy life, and looking back it always seemed that the trouble began with their parents' divorce." The novel, Yates's fourth, "is centred on the struggles of his female protagonist, Emily Grimes, and her older sister, Sarah. Both sisters try to become writers and for different reasons fail in this ambition. In the course of his narrative Yates suggests how men, threatened by female ambition, hold back the women they live with. At the same time, Yates also weaves into this novel his awareness of domestic violence, suggesting an understanding of the vulnerability of women within marriage." Finally, Yates's inclusion of abortion in Easter Parade (as well as Revolutionary Road) "suggests attentiveness to, and sensitivity towards, the political debate about the rights of women."
