About this Item: William Heinemann & Doubleday Pace & Co., London & New York., 1910. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. With thirty-four Illustrations by Arthur Rackham (illustrator). 1st Edition. Brown cloth hardcover which is sunned, gilt has wear. Spine solid, internally slight but noticeable yellowing of the pages. With 34 coloured plates, tipped in onto stiff paper with captioned tissues, and with pictorial endpapers. Although the Rhinegold comes first in the sequence of Ring operas, it was the last to be conceived. Wagner's plans for the cycle grew backwards from the tale of the death of the hero Siegfried, to include his youth and then the story of the events around his conception and of how the Valkyrie Brünnhilde was punished for trying to save his parents against Wotan's instructions. About this Item: William Heinemann Ltd. - Doubleday, Page & Co., London - New York, 1910. Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). First Edition. 1910 at title page; no other dates, indications. Fine midnight blue full-cloth boards, sharp gilt cover and spine design, titles, moderate shelf wear generally, some edge wear. Crisp cover design features titles w/stylized knight on horseback, dragon eating its tail and spine features titles w/classic ouroboros insignia. Doubleday, Page & Co. in gilt at spine. Pages very good; characteristic toning throughout, fox at endps. Vintage inscription at endpapers. Decorated endpapers w/floating fairies. Bind fine; hinges intact. A solid example of fine book craftsmanship. These works are based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas, and are translated here into English by Margaret Armour. The saga included in this volume are ‘The Rhinegold’ the prelude, and ‘The Valkyrie’ the first day of the trilogy. Initially establishing his reputation as a romantic composer, Wagner revolutionized opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (‘total work of art’), by which he sought to synthesise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts. This edition of ‘The Rhinegold & The Valkyrie’ is heightened by the dazzling color illustrations of a master of the craft, Arthur Rackham. One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackham’s artistry is unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text, these illustrations further refine and elucidate Wagner’s captivating storytelling. Printed in Great Britain by R. Clay and Sons, Ltd., Brunswick Street, Stamford Street, Suffolk. 161 pages of text w/34 tipped-in plates. Insured post. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Seller Inventory # 019482

About this Item: William Heinemann, Doubleday, Page & Co. & Co, London, NY, 1910. Orig Blue Cloth w/Gilt. Condition: Very Good Plus. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). First US Edition. This 160 page First US Edition, being an increasingly well respected and energetically applauded offering it is proudly presented with great and well deserved hubris by Hirschfeld Galleries in the publishers original binding. Said binding being original blue pictorial cloth with cover design block in gilt. Binding excellent save for a bit of bumping to top and bottom of spine cloth. 34 tipped-in color plates plus 8 line drawings by Arthur Rackham. Pictorial endpapers US edition is bound from the UK sheets, printed by Ballantyne & Co., London. First part in Wagner's "Ring of the Niblung" trilogy, with which he had become inspired after travelling extensively in Europe, particularly to Germany, the Alps, and Italy. His illustrations are infused with the European landscape and architectural subjects. Rackham's first successes, which coincided with the fashion for lavishly produced gift books, were illustrations to 'The Ingoldsby Legends' (1898), 'Gulliver's Travels' (1900), and 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' (1900). These were followed by 'The Greek Heroes' (1903), 'Rip Van Winkle' (1905), 'Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens' (1906), and 'Alice in Wonderland' (1907). "From 1905 to 1910, as printing techniques improved, his line became sharper and likewise his detail more intense. In 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' (1908) he developed his gift for drawing witches, gnomes, fairies, and anthropomorphized trees and brought them to a pitch of vivid characterization, sometimes with an unsettling frisson of horror. Trees with human limbs and faces became one of his trademarks, and may have been throwbacks to childhood memories of the Tradescants' garden [opposite his childhood home]. Despite the fantasy of his subjects, however, Rackham always maintained a strict sense of reality by giving his figures human traits and foibles and naturalistic, even recognizable, settings-illustrations in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' are variously set in Wimbledon Park, Ruislip churchyard, and Walberswick, Suffolk" But enough of the lugubrious however allegorically wise jaw-jacking, enough said of the telluric parameters of select Hirschfeld Galleries' offerings such as this one which take on a life of their own and speak so very loudly for themselves. Read to learn and enjoy; go forth to share and enjoin. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Hardcover Classic. Seller Inventory # 006055

Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Wagner’s captivating storytelling. Printed in Great Britain by R. Clay and Sons, Ltd., Brunswick Street, Stamford Street, Suffolk. 161 pages w/34 tipped-in plates. Insured post. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Seller Inventory # 019614
