About this Item: Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2014. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 256 pages. Published in 2014. Landmark collection of photographs-with-text. One of the greatest books of the 20th century. While Jim Goldberg's masterpiece is on every list of the greatest photography books, it transcends the medium and must be seen as one of the most valuable social documents of our time. The first appearance of the title as a Hardcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run by Steidl. The First Edition Thus is now scarce. A brilliant production by Jim Goldberg and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial cloth boards with black titles and reproduction of handwritten text on cover and black titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Jim Goldberg. The texts are by the subjects themselves, reproduced in their entirety with their formal portraits. Color double-sided foldout encased in its own pouch at the back. The latter is stunning and appears in published form for the very first time. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. In wraparound DJ with titles in front, on the spine, and on the back, as issued. Re-presents, in a definitive new edition, Jim Goldberg's "Rich And Poor". Masterpiece. His technique is now well-known and widely copied: By having his subjects write their own comments (which they then signed), Goldberg enabled them to speak in their own words. His point is arrestingly simple: Every human being's handwriting is, like the human voice, unique. It is therefore one of the ways a person not only resonates with others, but more important, reveals his or her true self. Goldberg took two sets of photographs (the subject-portrait and the subject-handwriting) then fused them into one seamless image-cum-text. The ever widening gap between Rich and Poor in America is a national scandal that Goldberg bears witness to without ever sounding strident or didactic. Still, Goldberg's portraits, which show each subject "in-situ" indoors, whether it's a dingy hotel or a lavish home, show that there is one thing that the Rich and Poor have in common: Isolation. The Poor are isolated from society by poverty. The Rich are isolated too, in a sense more acutely so, by privilege. As many of Goldberg's rich subjects say, often defensively, their wealth forces them to cut themselves off from humanity and to create their own private space, a distancing that our celebrity-obsessed culture makes total: The Rich and Famous are completely inaccessible, that is, they are accessible only through media. The book showcases "a surplus of vintage material and contemporary photographs that have never been published or exhibited", notably the color foldout at the back. An absolute "must-have" title for Jim Goldberg collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Jim Goldberg. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Goldberg did a one-time-only signing, in New York City, to launch the book. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: All copies of the original 1985 Edition available online have major flaws yet command more than $1000. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Jim Goldberg's "Rich and Poor" was selected as one of the "Seminal Photography Books" in the "Book of 101 Books". "Raised By Wolves" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JIM GOLDBERG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 3869306882. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 19198
