About this Item: Savoy Associates, Hampshire Typothetae, Mercantile Printing Company, N.P., 1986. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First, Limited Edition. N.P.: Savoy Associates, Hampshire Typothetae, Mercantile Printing Company, 1986. First, limited edition, 1986, signed by the artist, Richard Yarde, on the unnumbered limitations page, and with all 28 color lithographs, mainly double-page, also pencil signed by the artist. Magnificent production by the Hampshire Typothetae, designed by Barry Moser, bound at Samuel Ellenport's Harcourt Bindery in Boston. This book consists of a large (15.5" x 12" x 2.25") rigid portfolio with black cloth covers and black leather spine accented in red leather, lettering in gilt, lined in red cloth. Inside are two packets of unbound folded leaves (paper size 14.5" x 22"), one with the text and 14 signed plates, the other with an additional 14 plates (not duplicates), loosely held in a folder of sorts made of black paper and white card stock. The full size pages contain crop marks at the edges no doubt meant for use if the book were to be bound, which would actually be kind of a shame. There are four corner bands inside the front cover of the portfolio which may have been intended to store something, but this is the way we purchased the book from a local individual whose father bought it back in the 1980s and didn't have any insight about its history. The prints are stunning portrayals of New York jazz culture in Harlem during the early to mid 20th century. Very minor wrinkle to the far bottom edge of the first blank page and half-title, otherwise like new condition. Signed by the Artist. First, Limited Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. Folio - 12" - 15" Tall. About this Item: Savoy Associates, 1986. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Original cloth portfolio box, the spine in black morocco, bearing brilliant red & black gilt label, the production crafted at the Hampshire Typothetae, designed by Barry Moser, and bound at Sam Ellenport's Harcourt Bindery, in Boston, with all twenty-eight prints signed in pencil by Yarde. Limited to 400 copies, the present example not numbered. Accompanied by an original watercolor, by Yarde, of a dancer, fully occupying a sheet 10" x 14." Standard book auction records since 1986 show no copies having sold over the block, and, so far as I can tell, there is not another copy for sale showing up on-line. Equally surprising: the only accessioned example in a library in North America is at Smith College. Where are the others? **The Savoy Ballroom, on Lenox Avenue at 140th Street, was a Harlem phenomenon of the 1926 to 1959 era, and of a size sufficient to house 4,000 dancers and multiple bands in its heyday. Yard's watercolors, reproduced in this production, constitute the artist's imagining, in two dimensions, the aura and dynamic nature of the rhythms of dance and of jazz. He was born in Roxbury MA in 1939, derived much of his bold, colorful and imaginative bent from the black experience, and has had his work installed in the permanent collections of several dozen museums. He died in 2011 and is remembered with much fondness by those in the area who knew him, or were merely acquainted with him. Signed by Illustrator(s). Seller Inventory # E-32/2
