Unbound. Condition: Very Good. George Cruikshank (illustrator). A scarce satirical pamphlet by William Hone and George Cruikshank. In 1817 he published 'Reformists' Register' to criticise state abuses, which he later attacked in the famous political squibs and parodies illustrated by Cruikshank. These publications caused him to be prosecuted numerous times officially due to being 'harmful to public morals,' but clearly due to his ridiculing of the habits and exposing of the corruption of those in power. Illus. with three woodcuts by George Cruikshank; edges a little dusted. Uncut, sewn as issued. (16)pp. See Cohn 606. A biting satire on the trial of Queen Caroline, recalling the crucial cross-examination of key prosecution witness Teodor Majocchi. The former servant's testimony was placed under intense scrutiny by defending attorney Lord Brougham, who directed a barrage of questions at Majocchi that he was unable or unwilling to answer. The case for the prosecution slowly crumbled as the hapless witness pleaded, reportedly over 200 times, 'Non mi ricordo', i.e. I cannot recall. The phrase was quickly seized upon by satirists and political commentators, becoming something of a national joke.
