Item Description: Smith, Elder and Co., London, 1908. First Edition. 8vo. 336pp. + 4pp. ads. Publisher's black cloth titled and decorated in white tio spien and front board. The whiote, perhaps unsurprisingly is usally significantly chiped and damaged and, although on this copy there is still some loss to the white paint on the spine it is a significantly better copy than is norrmally seen. Minor edgewear and bumping, a few slight bits of scuffing here and there, altogether a very good copy indeed. Internally clean, minor spotting to prelims, very slight starting to front inner hinge, light sporadic spotting to page edges. Ownership to upper edge of half title. All charts and maps present and shipshape. Often cited alongside Kipling's "Kim" of 1901 as the first modern espionage novel, Riddle of The Sands is one of the few pieces of whole coth fiction to have had a significant effect on real world events. The depiction of German warmogering skulduggery amongst the Fresian Islands was considered so strategically accurate and prescient as to inform the construction of Royal Navy installations at Scapa Flow and the North East coast of Scotland. There was a new edition published a few years later in which Childers wrote a rather askance apology for anything that might have been considered too aggressive towards the Germans, only to be proved absolutely correct a few years after that. Childers himself was one of those terribly British chaps who might have been born as a blueprint for Richard Hannay and Bulldog Drummond; he served with the CIV in South Africa, was a keen amateur sailor and a fierce advocate of Irish Home Rule (on one famous occasion he smuggled 900 rather geriatric Mauser rifles into Ireland aboard his yacht Asgard), served in a number of capacities during the First World War (seeing no inconsistency in fighting the Germans and indeed the English at the same time, something he had in common with many Irishmen) including being part of the embryonic Royal Air Force, at that point part of the navy and being mostly concerned with seaplanes; Childers of course managed to get himself involved in perilous coastal survey flights in machines made of balsa wood and spit, and bombing raids against airships sheds. Eventually, as so often happens with men of strong beief and no sense of self-presrvation, he was caught in possession of a firearm (actually a gift from Michael Collins) on his weay to visit Eamonn De Valera, he was sentenced to death by firing squad and summarily executed whilst his appeal was still underway (classy, England, classy). His last words were rather typically British, and addressed to the men of the firing squad, whose hands he made a point of shaking to show there were no hard feelings; "Take a step or two closer lads, it'll be easier that way." He also extracted a promise from his 16 year old son (the future President of Ireland) to seek out and shake hands with every man who had signed his death warrant.Eamonn De Valera said of him; "He died the Prince he was. Of all the men I ever met, I would say he was the noblest." Churchill on the other hand said "No man has done more harm or shown more genuine malice or endeavoured to bring a greater curse upon the common people of Ireland than this strange being, actuated by a deadly and malignant hatred for the land of his birth." which shows that you really can't please everyone. Difficult in any condition, rare in anything approaching attractive form. junecat. Bookseller Inventory # 228

Item Description: London, Smith Elders & Co., 1903. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by London, Smith Elders & Co.in 1903.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD+ condition. 336pp. + 4pp ads. Publisher’s decorated black cloth with titles in white to the spine though quite rubbed as is lamentably often the case.Light bumping to extremities, rubbing to spine not affecting the integrity of the book.Decorated boards sharp, a little bit of inoffensive wear here and there.Internally free from inscriptions and erasures. There is the expected occasional light spotting.Illustrated with fold out maps and charts which are all present.Frontispiece folding chart a trifle creased with some light soiling to the title page.Housed in a custom slander box.A very good copy of the first edition of a book somewhat contentiously described as the first modern espionage novel, vying for the title with Kipling’s Kim, published two years earlier. Originally written after he returned injured from action in South Africa and first published in 1903 the novel of imminent conflict with Germany was highly influential and is actually credited with the founding of British naval bases at Invergordon and Scapa Flow; newly regarded as strategically important after examination of the scenarios in Childer’s novel. Childers was of course a staunch advocate of Irish Home Rule and was found guilty of possessing a firearm in contravention of the Irish Emergency Powers Resolution and sentenced to death by firing squad in 1922.The book was adapted in 1979 into a movie starring Michael York and Simon MacCorkindale. An exceptionally scarce and important title to find in any condition.Highly collectible with such attributes. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-5641803835662871953

Item Description: Smith Elder & Co, London, 1903. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. The Riddle of the Sands, A Record of Secret Service Recently Achieved, edited by Erskine Childers. A very good copy of the first edition of The Riddle of the Sands. The book is notoriously known as the first modern espionage novel with Childers employing a formula of verifiable detail to give authenticity to the story. From his 1897 Baltic log book at The National Maritime museum notes of Childers's own sailing trips along the East Frisa coast are commented on within the novel. The same ploy of using realistic details was used by other spy writers such as John Buchan, Ian Fleming and John Le Carre. The book was originally written after the return of Childers who was injured from war action in south Africa. It recounts the imminent conflict with Germany and called for British preparedness of war. At the time the whole genre of "invasion novels" raised the public's awareness of the "potential threat" of Imperial Germany. The copy is in very good condition. A lovely find and highly collectable. Publisher's decorated dark cloth boards with embossed lettering on the spine and white yacht illustration on the front. Bumped spine ends and wear to the spine edges. The edition is cocked. Illustrated with four fold out maps and charts with 1" tear on one of the maps. Pages are free from significant foxing - some marks on a few pages. Hinges are good - one map is partially loose. The book holds together well. End papers a little grubby/foxed with small red ink marks. 336pp. plus 4pp advertisements. Bookseller Inventory # 000037
