About this Item: London: The Arcadia Press, 1972, 1972. Folio. Original half vellum, handmade "seaweed" paper boards, spine with gilt titles direct, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, green endpapers, calligraphic-style text printed in green and black on handmade seaweed paper, made using a process in which seaweed is pressed into the paper, reproducing with striking likeness the transluscent quality of submarine flora. With the original cream paper slipcase. Two tiny white specks to front free endpaper due to production flaw; slipcase with minor rubbing to extremities and light bowing to fore edges. A bright and fresh copy. With 10 tipped-in colour plates. Signed limited edition, number 86 of 110 copies signed by the illustrator Errol Le Cain, the calligrapher David A. Howells, and the paper maker Philip H. Rowson. The contrast of Le Cain's boldly colourful illustrations with the delicate quality of the pressed seaweed peppered throughout the text lends itself particularly well to the subject of Coleridge's epic poem. Back cover, also with blind decorative paneling, shows moderate scuffing and discoloration from the elements and time, but there are NO water stains, coffee cup markins, or any other injurious blemishes. Binding is firm and straight. The front end papers (original) have minor wear, back eps are quite good. Printed pages and plates throughout are Vg to Nf and a pleasure to behold. About this Item: Douglas Cleverdon for the Fanfare Press, Bristol, 1929. 4to (315 x 248 mm; 12 1/4 x 10 inches). 10 copper-engraved plates by Jones. Original quarter gilt-lettered cream cloth, green boards. Spine slightly soiled, light wear at extremities. LIMITED EDITION, number 265 of 480 total copies. "David Jones (1895-1974) produced a set of copperplate engravings for the 1929 edition. They usually contain notable elements of Christian symbolism - the priest with his censer, for example, in this illustration for the wedding scene - but a strong Celtic influence is also apparent in the beautiful, simple elegance of his figures. During the late 1920s, Jones stayed with the family of the artist Eric Gill and became engaged to one of Gill's daughters, Petra. Her long neck and high forehead became standard features in his illustrations of women" (British Library). The Artist and the Book 136; Ransom, Cleverdon 7. Seller Inventory # 403565

About this Item: Harrap, London, 1910. Hardcover. Condition: Good. This is 232/525 of the limited edition produced and signed by Willi Pogany. It is generally accepted as the acme of that very prolific illustrator and artist¿s work and, together with illustrated versions of Tanhauser, Parsifal and Lohengrin is spoken of as Pogany¿s ¿quartet of masterpieces¿. It was ¿ designed completely by Pogany, from the covers and endpapers to the text written in pen and ink, pencil, wash, color and tipped-on plates¿. The Ancient Mariner, a large book 9.5" by 11.75". is recognized as his masterpiece. Each page has at least two colors, sometimes with gilt plate accompanied by intricate borders The initials are elaborate, starting each page and with ornate capitals at the beginning of every line. The illuminated title page, 18 color plates, the second color through black-and-white plates, the flowing calligraphic text, and the pen-and-ink drawings throughout the pages make this a stand out among Pogany's works.¿ ( Quotations from Wikipedia). Harrap hardback. Illustration and letterpress by Vincent Brookes Day and 4 colour plates by Bemrose Dalziel No DJ and no slip case. Calfskin binding with embossed gilt lettering and illustration of a ship in sail on the front with gilt lettering and design to the spine. There is moderate edge and corner wear to the boards with some areas of superficial loss on the rear upper border and an ill defined stain. Binding good. Owner¿s name on reverse of front cover and a further name, dated 1956 on the end page. Stamp opposite the title page signed by Pogany and the enumeration 232 entered by hand. Silk place holder. Upper margin of the text block gilt: the remaining two borders are rough trimmed. Ornate capitals, intricate border decorations, numerous vignettes and some full page illustrations and pale decorative designs behind the calligraphy of the verse. One or two of the tipped in plates are somewhat ill defined but it is difficult to know whether this is age or the intention of the artist. A very fine example of an important book.
