About this Item: New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1930. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Darley, Felix (illustrator). Limited. Illustrated by Felix Darley. Limited edition of 1,500 numbered copies. Signed by designer Frederick W. Goudy on the limitation page. Finely bound in the publisher's full green sheep, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Very good, with some wear and rubbing to the extremities, toning to the spine and board edges, minor toning to the endpapers and page edges, otherwise bright and fresh interior. Overall, a pleasing copy. Originally published in 1819, Rip Van Winkle is a short story about a man living in the Catskill Mountain range in the years before the onset of the American Revolution. While walking his dog in the woods one day, Van Winkle meets some ghosts of the original Dutch settlers of New York and, after drinking some of their spirits, he falls into an enchanted sleep. He wakes up an elderly man in a changed society; during his sleep, the American colonies won their independence from England and his children matured into adulthood. After absorbing the shock of these changes, Van Winkle resumes his life as a happy wanderer. This copy of Rip Van Winkle was designed and signed by Frederic W. Goudy, the prolific American typographer who created the Goudy Old Style font. He created new type "Kaatskill" specifically for "the composition of this great American classic by the great American author who first interpreted the spirit and function of American literature." Goudy elaborates: "Since [consciously] the type owes nothing in its design to any existing face, the type is therefore truly an American type as anything hidebound by tradition as type can be." Indeed, even the name "Kaatskill" references the mountain range in upstate New York that provide the setting for Rip Van Winkle. Signed. Seller Inventory # WI007
