Black and white drawings by R. Williams (illustrator). First Edition. The title novella is a beautifully written and poignant exploration of family, nature, and the passage of time, using the art of fly-fishing as a profound metaphor for life's complexities and spiritual connections. Maclean wrote this America classic at the age of 70, following his retirement from the University of Chicago as William Rainey Harper Professor of English. The true first printing of the book, with error in ISBN on copyright page and misspelling on page 27. The dust jacket lower fore corner is clipped, leading us to suspect it may be a second printing jacket. However, minor patterns of wear are consistent between the jacket and the book, indicating that they likely have been together since being issued. A beautiful, bright copy with no prior ownership marks. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Shallow bumps at spine ends, spine lettering remains bright. Jacket has slight rubs at fore corners, a few shallow wrinkles at spine ends, a couple of tiny rubs along lower joint fold, and a short 5/8" long abrasion near top fore corner of rear panel. Hardcover. Octavo. xiv, 217 pages.

"Adways" on p. 27. ISBN on copyright page is 022650051. ISBN on rear flap is 022650051. A first edition of Maclean's collection of three semi-autobiographical stories taking place in the American West. This book, published when the author was 73 years old, was the only book that Norman Maclean (1902-1990) published during his lifetime. "A River Runs Through It" has proven to be one of the most enduring American stories ever written. From the dust jacket- "Maclean's rich understanding of human nature is evident in his descriptions, not only of how men worked in the woods, but how they felt while they worked and after they finished working. We meet Chief Ranger Bill Bell, master of men and mules and a chump at cribbage and poker; Jim, the unforgettable sawyer, part-time pimp, and socialist who thought Eugene Debs was soft; and the author's younger brother, Paul, who was one of the greatest fly fishermen in the West and for whom the title story is a memorial." "Based on Norman Maclean's childhood experiences, 'A River Runs Through It' has established itself as one of the most moving stories of our time; it captivates readers with vivid descriptions of life along Montana's Big Blackfoot River and its near magical blend of fly fishing with the troubling affections of the heart." First edition of Maclean's classic first book. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket photograph by Joel Snyder. "[Maclean] would go to his grave secure in the knowledge that anyone who'd fished with a fly in the Rockies and read his novella on the how and why of it believed it to be the best such manual on the art ever written--a remarkable feat for a piece of prose that also stands as a masterwork in the art of tragic writing" (Philip Connors, The Nation). Adapted to the immensely successful film, directed by Robert Redford, starring Brad Pitt, Craig Sheffer and Tom Skerritt. It went on to win an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
