About this Item: Pocket Books, New York, NY, 1976. Mass-market paperback. First edition. Glued binding. xiv, [2], 237, [3] p. From Wikipedia: "Norman Fitzroy Maclean (December 23, 1902 August 2, 1990) was an American author noted for A River Runs Through It and Other Stories (1976) and Young Men and Fire (1992). The family relocated to Missoula in 1909. The following years considerably influenced and inspired his writings, appearing prominently in the semi-autobiographical novella A River Runs Through It and Other Stories (1976). The novella USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky and the story "Black Ghost" in Young Men and Fire (1992) are semi-fictionalized accounts of these experiences. A River Runs Through It and Other Stories was published to widespread acclaim. The book was the first work of fiction published by the University of Chicago Press. He spent the last years of his life attempting to write a non-fiction account of the 1949 Mann Gulch forest fire. The manuscript was published posthumously as Young Men and Fire, and won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1992." Good. Cover has some wear and soiling. First Pocket paperback edition. First printing [stated]. Seller Inventory # 70319

MOVIE TIE-IN: The title story in this anthology was the basis for the 1992 feature film of the same name. SYNOPSIS: "IN OUR FAMILY, THERE WAS NO CLEAR LINE BETWEEN RELIGION AND FLY FISHING." Unique in the annals of modern fiction, A River Runs Through It is more than just a portrait of a vanished America--it is a living piece of that world. Written when Norman Maclean was in his seventies, his first book of fiction was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and became a bestseller. The title novella recalls the experiences of a young man in frontier Montana: of his minister father, who taught his sons the ways of grace and fly fishing; of his brother, an artist at trout fishing but less than successful at life; and the swift, cold rivers than ran from the heart of the mountains into the still-mysterious heart of man. About this Item: University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1976. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. University of Chicago Press. Chicago. 1976 (1977). 217 pages. First Edition, 3rd printing. Near fine in a VG dj. A tiny print run on the first printing has elevated the cost of this title dramatically, as even the early later (affordable) printings were also in small press runs. Baby Blue cloth is bright and clean. Pages are clean and bright. Book is tight. $7.95 price intact on DJ flap. Only flaw keeping this book from grading fine is that one corner is gently pushed (barely). Rear of DJ, like 1st issue, has the MacLean photo and lacks the ISBN number. DJ shows light edgewear, some rubbing a tiny inadvertent pen mark on bottom right. A very nice book in a slightly lesser DJ. Seller Inventory # 001326

True First Printing, one of about 5000 copies (though claims often are made the first run numbered as few as 1577 copies), with all first-issue points present: no printing history line on copyright page; disagreement between ISBN codes on copyright page and on the rear dust jacket flap (the latter is correct) and "adways" (for "always") on p. 27. 8vo: xiv,217,[1]pp. Publisher's sky-blue cloth, spine lettered in silver, mustard end papers; in matching blue dust jacket, priced $7.95, with woodcut vignette on front and author's photo on back panel. "We lived at the junction of great trout rivers in western Montana, and our father was a Presbyterian minister and a fly fisherman who tied his own flies and taught others. He told us about Christ's disciples being fishermen, and we were left to assume, as my brother and I did, that all first-class fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fishermen.'' Maclean's elegiac meditation on the intricacies of fly fishing, logging, fighting forest fires, playing cribbage and being a husband and father. Two novellas and a short story, the first of which was adapted to film by Robert Redford, with Tom Skerritt, Craig Sheffer, and Brad Pitt. Seller Inventory # 1309088
